I've been wondering about this guy.. I had chicks hatch and got some from Murray McMurray the same day....
How long does it take after after a hen quits laying for her vent to dry and get tight? How do I know if this is a permanent/long term change or the result of daylight hours/molting?

I always hold my eggs air cell up since that is where the chick will pip. During the last three days they shouldn't be moved much so they can position themselves for hatching.
I put crushed oyster shell in my muddy spot. It may not be feasible depending on how much you are trying to cover but it took care of my muddy spot and also is a source of calcium.
