my husband would think it would be awesome to shoot rats with a gun. He'd probably volunteer to come do it for you! HAH HAH!!
but seriously, maybe the poison would be a better idea. You'd get more "bang" for your buck, so to speak. Bullets are expensive...
I just posted a thread about an...
DDawn,
yes, just telling a story. And I realize I'm opening up myself to criticism for my stupidity in leaving the coop open all year. I realized that going into this post. That was dumb and I learned my lesson. I never expected the division betwen the opposum handling tactics, though...
My husbands #1 concern was for our hens. He wasnt about to take a risk that the opposum could come back. The hens are in a fenced off area where they roam around freely during the day and if the opposum had come back, we might not have gotten lucky twice.
I dont know how big it is, I didnt...
I live in a neighborhood with few chicken predators save your typical neighborhood cats & dogs and the occassional groundhog (my biggest concern, or so I thought). There's a preserved area down the street near a canal, so we have a group of deer in the area and once I saw a wild turkey cross...
Hi, what kind of light? My friend who already owned chickens years before I did was using two 60 watt light bulbs, thinking they were warm enough and he couldnt understand why he lost 30 of his 60 chicks within a week. IMO they should be on a 250 watt red light. I almost lost two babies within...
Hi, my husband is building our first coop. I think we went a little chicken crazy and got 10 when we only planned to get 3 bantams, but ah well. He built three nesting boxes which stick out the back to give it more floor space. So, is a 4x6 coop big enough if the chickens are to be free range...
ChicknJane, i told my husband about the idea to trade. He started laughing because we dont even know if we have a rooster in the mix (although Im sure theres a good chance- seems to happen to everybody else who buys all pullets, right? LOL). I would totally be up for it. A barred rock or an...

noticed in your signature that you have araucanas. pure, not ameracauna or EE? that is so cool, my firend says he has araucanas, but I think he may have been taken for a ride. Do you breed yours? or sell chicks?
Hi to all of you. this is a great site, too good. Ive been TRYING to get off this site literally all day. I even turned off the computer only to turn it back on 30 minutes later. LOL
Here is a pic of The Phoenix ( I love that name, hahha). Does she look like a standard buff to you?
In the bottom pic you can see how small she is compared to the Orp and the Barred. They're from the same local feed store, but I think they must have hatched the Brahmas a few days later even...
heres a head shot of my barred rocks. see how the color is yellow, not white? is this ok? also, neither one has a consistent head dot
and here is one of them standing on the pedestal.
I did a lot of reading in books and internet and here of course. Americaunas and Aracaunas (sp?) are two distinct different breeds. The Ameracaunas have a nice website describing the breed in detail. Aracaunas have no tails and are missing a bone in that area, giving them a stunted appearance...

that was great stuff. I just went to check them. My barred rocks have yellow spots on their heads, not white. I'll upload pics of them in a minute.

I LOVE the Brahma. She is so gentle looking and sweet. How many Brahmas do you have, are they Buff?
Thats why I was so worried, becasue of all the chicks I chose her (my kids/DH have theirs picked out) and she is my only Brahma. That was a mistake, should have gotten one more and one...
Im a newbie too, but my chicks are two weeks old now. I had the same issue but honestly think it's fine to have the brooder like this. The chicks will self regulate- they'll move closer or further to the warmth depending on their internal temp. You sound very organized and researched- just...

Pop- I'll take your word for it. 52 years with chickens, eh? You're my new chicken whisperer. LOL
it was just so weird, fascinating, and a little nerve racking. I really dont/cant have any roosters.

Thanks, I'm glad she's better too. I just hope she doesnt relapse being in the brooder with the others. Your post is making me suspect even more that one or two of my chicks is a rooster. It was fascinating to watch them go at each other like that, havent seen them do it before. It...

One barred rock and 1 EE. I have two barred, and frankly, dont know if 1 or both of them are acting like this since they're hard to tell apart. But, the EE is not feathering out as fast as the other EE or the other chicks, Uh oh. I have read thats a sign of a cockerel.
thanks. One of them just "seems" like a rooster. She (the Barred) always stands on the pedestal we have in the brooder and wont let anybody else on. I guess she's just the "head mother clucker in charge" hahaha.
