4 y/o amerucauna not pooping and vomits after eating/drinking

agreed. check for the crop being impacted, then check for being egg bound if that's inconclusive. twisted or impacted bowels would be a fair assumption if neither of the other illnesses are the cause.

    Snowy chicken experiment

the reasoning behind "meals" as it were, is that chicken "inspections" happen before final feedings every night where i not only count all the chickens but also do a butt to crop inspection on every bird before said bird enters the lock-down area where food is provided for a half hour to an hour...

    Snowy chicken experiment

i appreciate all the feed back everyone! thankfully the girls still get water in the mornings but with the temps so low it doesn't take long for the surface to freeze and be inaccessible to the flock, the snow more or less is to supplement their water needs throughout the day will i'm at work...

    Snowy chicken experiment

all who live in the far northern or southern reaches of the world with chickens understand that water freezes quickly in the subzero temps of frigid winters and without a source of heat to create the thaw our poor children can't even get a sip. this situation inspired research into the subject...

Valiant young rooster brings fight back to assailant

so awhile back i had posted questions about the dangers of opossums. having taken care of a few over time i had felt confident my flock was safe, but alas... yesterday morning seemed normal with feeding time at dawn as usual, but as roll-call carried on it became clear someone was missing and in...

Best Way to Heat? at 60 below zero!

if someone wanted to go all out you could in addition to the sand, provide a tiny wood stove. even if properly installed though i would still put a cage enclosed around it and the stack thru the roof to keep the girls away. i agree, in such cold areas while using sand in an unheated coop. any...

Best Way to Heat? at 60 below zero!

living that far north I've heard of people switching to sand for bedding since that significantly reduces the chances of fire, about half a foot of sand is also very easy on upkeep as well

Best Way to Heat? at 60 below zero!

one 60 watt edison bulb can change the temperature of a ten by ten enclosed space by 5 degrees, but since coops should never be completely enclosed because of ventilation, you can't really apply that concept to the coop since any stored heat is just blown out the vent. personally I've used a...

i would try something to soften up his stool. it still looks very plugged and inflamed. is the yellow i'm seeing look like puss to you? if so i strongly recommend a re-soak an then once it's clear of visible fecal matter or infection debris applying vaseline liberally around the vent. for...

    Sick Chicken, need help diagnosing

i would bathe her in warm epsom salt water for awhile. if you have supplementary antibiotic, i would personally recommend using it, as of this point the only way to tell if she's egg-bound is if she's very docile, hunched, wide legged (waddling), and uninterested in for the most part food or...

    Sick Chicken, need help diagnosing

i agree, check for symptoms of being egg-bound but if shes pooping i'd check to make sure she's actually able to push the poop out. if not she'll just kinda ooze from her vent.
