One of my hens is behaving strange. She's not eating, not laying, and will extend her neck and make what seems like a coughing noise. It's like she has something caught in her throat. Any suggestions?
Here are some updated of my 14 chicks brooding. I'm going to try to guess which are male and which are female. Let me know if I'm right. I think I have an even split of 7 each. Not all are pictured, and some are pictured twice.
This one is McNuggetJr's favoriate. I'm sure he is a male
I...
My first hatch of 14 chicks will be 6 weeks old next week. I plan on introducing them to their parents soon. But I'm not sure exactly how to go about it.
Right now, they are in my garage, 7 in the brooder cage and 7 in the large dog crate. I divided them this weekend because it looked a bit...
A while back I posted that I had some pecking problems
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=304967
Well... I wasn't "seeing" the pecking anymore, but most of my hens were getting bare spots on their backs. Like most people I have to work for a living so I'm not home to "see"...
Putting a gutter on the chicken house and use a 33 gal NEW never before used trash can as a catch barrel to catch the rain water from the gutter when it rains is a great idea you would think? Not having to haul water out to the chicken yard which is too far from the house for a hose and a...
I moved 10 out of the incubator last night into the brooder before I went to bed, and 3 this morning for a total of 13. 1 chick hatched this morning and is still in the incubator, and 3 eggs are still left to hatch that haven't pipped (not sure if they will). The ones that don't hatch, I'm...
I did it! I went to TSC today during lunch and bought my needed supplies... stoped and looked at the bunnies, chicks, and ducklings AND WALKED AWAY without looking back! LOL!
Ok... maybe the fact I had to go back to the office was the crutch I needed to walk away.... but it worked...
I'm selling my surplus eggs for $2 a dozen if the person provides me with an egg carton. $2.50 if they don't (the carton costs $.049 at the local TSC). Is this a good price? The local grocery stores charge $2.99 - $3.50 for their organic, brown, free range eggs. I use the money to buy chicken...
My RI Red Rooster gets aggressive sometimes (especially if he's been "busy" as my daughter, McNuggetJr, puts it) but over the past week he's been really agitated. Then on Saturday morning I heard the gobbler... I suspect it to be a wild tom. I watch the turkey from time to time and notice he...
I had a good egg collection yesterday. 14 eggs! I had only 8 the day before.
Anyway, I was in the pocess of sortting them and putting them in cartons last night when I knocked the WHOLE COLLECTION in the floor of the kitchen!
Everyone broke! What a mess! So it's clean up time.... and...
I have a hen that pecks the others on their backs at the base of their tail. She seems to be the "bully" of the flock. I've had to isolate one poor hen while her back heals, but she's featherless.
Is there's anything I can do to prevent this behavior?
It's still cool here but getting...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Very new to chickens. Got my first 12 birds in October 09 - 10 mature laying hen (6 buff and 4 black Orpington), 1 rooster (Rhode Island Red), 1 juvie hen (black Orpington). The rooster was a gift too because he just showed up one...
