So pretty sure one of my 22 week hens went broody. She is an Old English Banty who no longer will stay with my mixed flock (3 seabrights, one rooster, 3 glw, 2 ee, and 1 supposed ee who I'm pretty sure is laying a brown egg). She sits on her "clutch" of eggs and leaves maybe 2 to 3 times a day...
I am curious how old a chick is before you get to see their "adult" feathers? My kiddos are all between 3.5 weeks and 6 weeks, so I know I have a long ways to go.
If different breeds feather at different rates then the ones in question are:
Gold Laced Wyandottes
Golden Sebrights
Silver...
I was wondering at what age chicks develop the specific color patterns for cockerels vrs pullets? Roos have the very distinct black and silver while the hens are more brown, currently the chicks all look brown feathered but they have very different eye barring.
Thanks for your help!
Constant problems are a definite no-go here. Temperament will be one of the first qualifiers for a longer life.
Does coop size influence the hen/roo ratio? Or is is just simply the number of hens?
I would love some further education about roosters. So here are some questions that would help me plan for making flock decisions.
1. Can Bantam Roos breed Standard hens? Or can I assume my Standard hen eggs will be infertile?
2. I'm gonna guess up and say I have 5 roos out of 8 bantam...
It sounds like they might be too young to be in with your larger birds if they can be pushed out from the heat source. I'm sorry for your loss, but it might be good to find a way to separate any other little guys you have.
A week ago I purchased 5 Sebright Chicks from TSC. I am curious if their feather pattern will change as they age? I have 3 that are "laced" what I would guess is close to breed standard. And then I have 2 chicks that have a high level of "smuttiness" or just all around dark feathers.
These...
I could, but this is more enjoyable for me. I really like seeing how different things change with age and I have very limited storage on my phone. This will give me a nice easy way to keep everything together. =)
From other posts it looks like really even at 6 weeks it is a best guess situation...
I noticed a distinct difference in some of my 3 week old Sebrights wing feathers. Three of them have what I would consider to be a true lace pattern where they have lots of gold coming in with a prominent black edge around the tip of each feather. The other two however, look much more mottled in...
I wanted somewhere to document change in combs on my straight run bantams with final pictures being at the 6 week mark on April 30th.
