I make my feed so I was able to get extra ingred at feed store. I soak my feed a couple hours before serving and it goes further and they get more liquid in them. I feed them at night so they are calm and go in for the night easily. I only have 10 so I also train them to come to me and be...
I didn't think about them getting older. When I run into that problem I will re evaluate how I water them. Right now it works for them and keeps their water clean.
I only have 7 hens & so I have a waist high coop with 3 nest boxes. They usually all like to use the same one. I have a shredder for newspapers and use that in my boxes. I also use full newspapers for the coop floor and change it every morn. The hens can then walk on clean papers to get to...
Steve, I tried to put a pic. on but no luck. For my 7 chicken, I put a pallet waist high on legs. They have no problem jumping up and getting their water. The pallet stays mostly clean & easily maintenanced. The watering dish stays mostly clean.
I have tried different watering methods. Now I have a platform (slatted) That I put the watering dish on & they fly up to it. Now they can't make a mess.
I'm like you. I did a lot of research. The more I learned the more I knew I had to learn more. I also make my own feed. I sure enjoyed your article. Thanks.
I have taught my hens to come to me for a raisin. They don't get one if they don't let me pick them up. They are fast learners. Of course they are demanding now but if they get out of the area or I need to examine them, they usually come to.
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. My husband had a triple bypass heart procedure soon after I posted. My OE seems to be the only one effected. I don't see her being bullied. She still appears to be content and a good egg layer. I am applying elector psp today to the vent area. The...
My Olive Egger started losing feathers above & to the side of vent. She is not being bullied. Seems content. None of the other 6 hens have that problem. Now I am noticing some scalyness behind ear. If it's mites, shouldn't the other hens have the same problem?
I got tired of supervising the chickens when they foraged in the back yard so we built a wire tunnel they can go in and they are very happy. I don't have snow to deal with, though.
