Mine was in nest box (upper section) as well. I blocked her area off from other hens a day or so prior to putting babies in. She protected them very well. After about 48 hours, I moved her and the babies to a protected area of the roost (we have walk-in roost) so they could be contained but have...
I hang my garden hose over the fence so the water fills bucket below. During hot afternoon or when lazy, I leave it open a drip, and if it floods some of chicken yard, they seem to enjoy the cool mud. I have seen u tube videos of some cool auto systems...
Just a follow up - After separating mama, dominant hens, and rest of flock (3 areas), and reintroducing a new hen with mama every couple of days, all was going well. After most hens were back together, I let dominant mean girl back and it wasn't 15 minutes before she went right back to attack...
THanks. I am isolating mama with a friend inside big covered run, adding another hen every couple of days. I was just telling husband I need to add a 2nd roost bar in new space so dominant hens can roost higher. My 16’ roost has one long bar at one height. I was noticing when mama is being...
**1st Pic is from inside new coop - can see the screened area looking into original coop / yard space. 2nd pic is original coop/yard, can see the start of construction for new coop area (posts/roof beams)
THank you. No see/hear will be difficult, but will make it happen. Mama had choice to go with chicks... she did go with at first, but started staying hidden ...
We also have a "secure" run, coop, and a bigger run. Our big run is 80'x10', running along our 6' wood privacy fence. It is worth it for me. Your situation has lots of hazards. Is there any other way to create a larger run for them? I am considering chunnels... If you plan well, you can make...
do you think it is ok to swap them out in the same space... put queen and BFF in space 1 for morning, then move them into space 2, and let another group into space 1 for afternoon, or would you completely separate them out of sight / ear shot for that time
OK! So, I have one hen who was almost the nanny with mama. Mama was tolerant of her near chicks from very early. She is low on the pecking order, as well. I considered putting her and mama together, and then integrating another lower bird back with mama, kind of one addition at a time. I will...
Hi all! Thanks for helping me with my surrogate mama / day old chicks back in June. All are thriving, independent little teenagers now. Problem is the mama. When chicks started venturing into larger chick habitat, Mama stayed behind in the roost area. I continued to provide water and food for...
I've never heard this. I am determined to handle my hens regularly now that mean roo is in his new home. I didn't handle him or his hatch-mates much, and none are as friendly as my first girls, who we handled more often. I have 8 new(ish) buff orpingtons being raised by a black rock hen. They...
I went to spend time this afternoon with my girls. Mama has started taking her adopted babes out in the covered run - most of the other hens spend days under shade of their old coop in the "uncovered" area. I have noticed one senior member of the group menacing mama. Today, while they enjoyed...
Its a cute coop - but those bars are almost floor level after bedding. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it, like other post said, unless they are sleeping in nest boxes.
my only suggestion would be raise the bars at least 12-18" .. see if that tempts them. I wouldn't worry too much if they aren't using it yet... but it may be low enough that they do'nt recognize it as a roost. When I put my original chicks out in their coop, I had to go after dark for a week or...
We are in SW Idaho - so we definitely get winter for a good 4 months. my new walk in coop has 15x15 roof, built in a corner of a 5' privacy fence. I walled in one additional side completely, and did a 4x15 roost on that edge. The final side has half siding, half hardware cloth. I left upper...
I agree on the quality, and over populating prefab coops. I firmly believe that one big reason I have had such good luck with my chickens is they have MORE than ample room. WAY OVERKILL too much room. I wouldn't want to build anything crappy, but materials aren't terribly priced, and we have a...
I do have some pics of new coop on my profile / album. Old coop is visible in some of these. If i did make coops, I would have to design a simple, efficient pattern to use. I am no carpenter, but have learned so much and really enjoy putting them together.
That's my concern. I do see coops for sale in SW Idaho on craigslist, for good money, but I haven't researched if they actually sell. I think it would be great to tap into the urban chicken movement as a mentor/supplier. I am fairly newbie, but it is easy and fun to have the girls.
guessing that if he has gone up in price $100, then he must have enough demand. otherwise, basic sense would dictate he lower prices... those are way cute. I would LOVE to see your cow coop!
