They are definitely barred rocks and definitely pullets, although one is still not laying. My barred rocks are my most friendly chickens, so I’m not too sad about it.
First, a disclaimer...dogs are like people and they all have different personalities; however, my four dogs are great with the chickens. They are all strictly house dogs who go outside to play and do their business, but I don’t have to supervise them with the chickens who free range in the back...
I have 9 pullets, all raised from day old chicks. The oldest were born around 5/25 and the youngest around 6/30. One of the first group is laying consistently as of 12/5, and one from the other group is starting to squat and act like she may lay an egg soon. My question is, what is the latest...
Yes, to be honest I didn’t pay much attention to that when I got her, just because she was kind of a “bonus” chicken. I have nine pullets and only one is laying. They’re all over 6 months old.
That was the day I got her, and to be honest I was afraid she might have some kind of mite, so I hated her in some dawn dish soap! I don’t even know if that’s a thing, to bathe them, but she didn’t mind. It was 100 degrees outside, so she dried and dust bathed quickly.
This girl is 6-8 months old. She does not appear to lay eggs yet. She was sold to me from a breeder, but the breeder didn’t hatch her. I think she is from the breeder’s gorgeous BCM rooster, though. She wasn’t expensive, and I don’t care what she is, but I’m not buying the BCM. Any ideas? She...
Thank you! That makes sense. I didn’t know that about leghorns. I do have some pictures of them as day old chicks and last week. I got them around mid June. The suspected cockerel has a weird tail.
I am assuming you work at a farm store, and I have a question... I purchased two Prairie Bluebell eggers from Hoover’s Hatchery via Rural King in early May. One turned out to be a black rooster, and one turned out to be a gray/blue color. Those were purchased for a friend who wanted blue eggs. I...
Yes, and they didn’t have any labeled barred rock that day. I know that doesn’t mean anything. I was surprised the hatchery didn’t say that instead of assuring me they would be blue egg layers. I don’t know much about chicken genetics but it doesn’t seem possible for them to be that color and...
Well, he isn’t supposed to be a barred rock, so there’s a chance he’s some crazy mix. I emailed Hoover’s Hatchery and asked if these were really blue egg layers and they assured me they are. Now, I don’t actually believe that, but they obviously do...
