thanks guys! so glad to hear that chicken lice doesn't live on humans! i just read on e-how that i should put cedar chips in the coop. is that true?
also, what do i spray the coop with? and can i eat the eggs afterwards? and how long is the coop unuseable? is there a waiting period...
hope you can help. i need to clean the coop, chickens and remove the straw. how does one do that without getting lice on oneself and bringing it into the house? what protective gear to wear? can i breathe the savin?
thanks, joy
btw, after having had chickens for four years, i figured out...
my birds started losing feathers on their necks and i thought they were molting. now it's been a few weeks, the areas look red and they aren't losing any other feathers. there is no rooster, and these are not birds at the bottom of the pecking order. not every bird is losing feathers. my two...
great, thanks. i can't plant morning glories here in so cal. they are invasive and will literally grow underground and turn up everywhere.
i think i figured out what to do from your suggestion tho. i'm going to plant potato vines, and sheild the plants from the girls with sheets of...
I would love to plant some climbing plants along the run - it's 8' high - but my guess is that all the bottom parts will be eaten. that's not horrible, but i wonder how i can get them to grow?
anybody got any thoughts?
thanks! joy
i'm having similar experiences, but i haven't had actual blood on the feathers, just light smears of blood on the eggs, and what looked like discolored pine shavings near their poo. since i have different colored eggs, i can tell that it is a problem that seems to come and go. i have recently...
hi there. i'm in southern California and looking for one or two easter egger pullets. we have a fully organic set up, with five laying hens and room for a couple more. they have a nice coop and a big fully enclosed run. will drive to you. thanks, joy 818.257.0700 joy at joypeters dot com
boy, mine are pretty smart, AND pretty brave. they all know exactly where the gate is, and attack it as i approach. they know the sound of the BOSS bag, the top of the yogurt lid and the sound of me tearing the lettuce from 10' away. (i always toss in some lettuce). a couple of them will...
i would leave her separate, checking on her frequently. if she seems to lose her voice, strain to breathe or make a high pitched sound when breathing, she most likely has some type of lung involvement. this is usually accompanied by her crop turning dark, or purple.
if this happens, you'll...
my chicks have a coop inside a big enclosed run. i let them out of their run for ME, not for them. i need them to 'clean up' my pathways in the veggie garden. 10 minutes in that area and the pathways have no more little weeds growing. amazing little cleaners those chickies!
there is something you don't address in your ad. nothing about pesticides. this is a huge concern for people who grow organic crops in their backyards, and who want their chickens to eat organic feed. it almost feels insulting that you expound on how awesome your product is, and how natural...
scratch is just a treat, right? you don't depend on it. try giving them black oil sunflower seeds. it's beneficial for them internally and externally, and mine go N.U.T.S. for it. joy
this year i bought three pullets (just newly laying) from Ham and Eggs ranch in Norco. they are beautiful, healthy and most of all i didn't have to raise them from chicks. some people like that. i don't. $25 each. it was great! joy
anyone know any science that speaks to chickens that eat soy and gluten, passing those things on to soy and gluten allergic humans through eating the eggs?
i've found links where modesto milling sells soy free feed. and i've read you can feed your chickens cooked rice. but i'm not sure why...
i went in to Red Barn this weekend and they were giving away treats for my dogs. i asked about treats for my chickens and they said they didn't have any. next weekend i'm taking this article back to them and saying the same thing. maybe your customers aren't asking for them, because you never...
