thanks, joy
btw, after having had chickens for four years, i figured out...
my birds started losing feathers on their necks and i thought they were molting. now it's been a few weeks, the areas look red and they aren't losing any other feathers. there is no rooster, and these are not birds at the bottom of the pecking order. not every bird is losing feathers. my two...
I would love to plant some climbing plants along the run - it's 8' high - but my guess is that all the bottom parts will be eaten. that's not horrible, but i wonder how i can get them to grow?
anybody got any thoughts?
thanks! joy

anyone know any science that speaks to chickens that eat soy and gluten, passing those things on to soy and gluten allergic humans through eating the eggs?
i've found links where modesto milling sells soy free feed. and i've read you can feed your chickens cooked rice. but i'm not sure why...
Please help.
my year old welsummer hen has not laid an egg in a few days, she is getting quiet, has no voice, her comb is almost dark purple, and she's not really sociable.
any ideas? my three other girls seem ok.

My year old welsummer thinks she's a rooster, always squawking. but today she opens her beak, and sounds like she's trying to squawk, but not much noise comes out at first, then she gets a bit out. very different than her usual belt! thoughts? none of my other chickens seem off. thanks, joy
My 1 1/2 y/o Leghorn is molting for the first time. But it's right in the middle of a cold snap, (for us) and at nights it can get down into the 40s. Should i worry? Should I put her in a cage inside at night? What to do?
Thanks, Joy

We live in southern California. Day temps are in the mid 80s nights are in the 60s. There are six chicks, coop is smallish, with nice size run underneath.
Can I leave them outside at night? Also, do you think they will figure out how to climb down the ramp and get to their food and water...

our girls make a MESS of their food and water if i keep them locked in their run/coop during the day. they scrape the floor of the run into the water, smoosh the pine shavings into the food, and generally tear up the joint.
question: how can i keep their water and food clean, while still...
We've had our girls since July, and haven't had a molt. Do they molt yearly, or only in winter....
We live in So Cal, and it's never really cold here, never below 40. Thanks for any information. Oh, and how long does molting last? joy
We have two chix now, leghorn and ee. Both very sweet. Need broody to raise 3welsumer chix arriving 3/15. Just built beautiful new hen house for the girls! We are willing to drive 3+ hours if you have a broody to sell. Thx. Joy. 818.257.0700
Our leghorns free range with two dogs in an urban neighborhood. We have secure block walls, no known predators. Dogs are totally chicken safe. One is missing. Has been missing for two hours, starting at early dusk. No experience with them flying our 8' high gates. Big question, can one live...
we bought a wireless thermometer and placed one of the sensors in the coop. i'm getting temps of 64 in the morning to 106 in the late afternoon. i have two 3 week old leghorns, and i think they'll be able to go into the coop in the next few weeks, but i'm so worried about the heat.
am i going...
after reading books and absorbing the info on this website - i've found i'm terrified of pasting up.
now that they are almost a week old, their poo is QUITE a bit more than it was initially. i'm finding it gets stuck in their little fuzzbutts, but it doesn't seem to close off the whole area...
i received three from MPC yesterday, all wonderfully healthy as far as i can tell. but what do i know?
they are all white leghorns - you can see the little baby feathers in this pic.
