RIR with her tail down and mild wheezing

BeautifulJade - Ginger is doing much much better. I added supplements to the water and provided extra heat for a few days. I like the idea of trying garlic! What a great idea. Do you roast it first? I hope that your chicken is doing better as well!

2 of my girls have bald bums! What can I do?

One of mine lost all the feathers on her bum due to a very affectionate rooster. They eventually grew back (after giving away the roo)...maybe a month later. If you need cheap protein, I would feed them their own eggs like Turtle Power suggested. There are also pecking blocks: look up...

RIR with her tail down and mild wheezing

My 4 year old RIR, Ginger, started acting a sick this morning. Ginger is my favorite of 5 hens. She has her tail down, walks a little slower (almost a waddle), and lies down whenever she can. I have searched other posts, but she doesn't really fit the average sick hen scenario. She is...

Used a baby monitor and light for first night in the coop....aghhhh!

You sound like a great chicken mom This is our first winter with chickens and we living in MN so it is very cold here during the winter. In many of the posts that I read, people said that you didn't need to use a heat source as long as the coop is dry and not drafty. After holding out and...

Hawk hanging over my run! ALL DAY!!!

We lost our favorite silkie to a hawk this year...first year with chickens and our first loss. I hear what you are saying though. Even though the hawk can't get to the chickens, once it knows they are there it seems to stalk them. Below is a picture of where our "friendly" hawk was sitting...

A lone duck. Introduce him to my flock of 6 chickens?

So this ad was posted at my work classifieds: "Free Duck. Pet duck needs new home. Does not fly, very friendly, had chicken friends, but they are gone, he needs new friends." We have 6 chickens that are less than a year old (got them in March). 1 rooster, 1 RIR, 2 Salmon Favs, and 2 silkies...

    stripes on baby australorps?

I am new to the hobby and that seems to be the feeling I am getting! The australorp I mentioned was supposed to be a pullet...well "Nana" is a cuckoo maran roo. Oh the joys! If you can, post a pic of the mystery chick. Someone should be able to tell. Good luck to you and I am sorry to hear...

    stripes on baby australorps?

I had the same thing happen. After posting pics, mine turned out to be a cuckoo maran. From what I learned: yellow legs = Barred Rock, white legs = Cuckoo Maran. Good luck! Sorry you didn't get what you were promised.

Adding a 4 month old to a flock of 6-8 week chicks...is this ok??

I was planning on introducing them slowly...let them see each other with a divider between. I think the size difference might help since the newer one is the larger of them. Just not sure if it would be best to add this older pullet or keep looking for younger birds. Although I feel like it...

Adding a 4 month old to a flock of 6-8 week chicks...is this ok??

Someone in my area is selling orpington pullets that are about 3 - 4 months old. Can I safely add one or two to an established flock of youngsters (6-8 weeks)? Some of my young ones are bantams, but two are larger. I just don't want anyone to get hurt!! Thanks for helping a newbie that is...

    people with house chickens

We have outside chickens and my finance won't let me bring them in the house due to the poop factor. If they don't wear a diaper, do they just go anywhere they please or can you actually train a house chicken? Sounds like fun having them inside!!

    3 - 6wk old Silkies

Good to know. I haven't seen combs on any of them yet, so perhaps I will wait a bit longer. Since I already posted the pic, the first gray one - do you call that color blue or gray? I couldn't find an answer anywhere. THANKS!!!
