    The Hatching House?

This thread has been dormant for more than two years, but I found it this week. I ordered chicks from The Hatching House for the first time this year. They had an insane week and fell behind on their emails when I was expecting my chicks, I went searching for information and found this thread...

    communication expectations with hatchery?

Well, I'm glad I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I emailed again. Turns out that their hatch had come two days late, the night before I emailed, and they were about to email me and their other customers. I left immediately and brought home even more beautiful chicks than I had ordered :love...

    communication expectations with hatchery?

Leaving out identifying details to protect this breeder, hoping for the best. If this ends badly, I will write a separate post. Last year I started my backyard flock without previous experience. This year I pre-ordered chicks from a local-ish breeder to get some less-common breeds. I placed my...

    yeast-like spots on eggs

Birds are about nine months, have been laying for 3-4 months depending on the bird, and we're feeding them Blue Seal Home Fresh Extra Egg Layer crumble. We have only six birds. We think the one laying these eggs with calcium deposits is the Cinnamon Queen. The others are Speckled Sussex (2)...

What are these spots on my egg? It has the appearance of very fine grains of baker's yeast. Just came in from the nesting box.

    The favorite nesting box

OP Update: y'all are super helpful! Lower height + dark painted interior + a fake egg in the disfavored box = equal use of both boxes. Thank you all!!

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Check out the Hatching House in Canterbury, Connecticut. I'm excited to get some Fifty-Five Flowery Hen chicks from them this spring. FFFs are supposed to be friendly and prolific layers of extra-large white eggs. And they're autosexing so you'll know at hatch how many hens/roosters.

    The favorite nesting box

TL;DR: My chickens have a favorite nesting box. Why, and will it be a problem in the future? I am new to chicken keeping. Our six pullets (2 Speckled Sussex, one each Buff Orpington, Cinnamon Queen, Easter Egger, and Wyandotte, from Cackle Hatchery) are seven months old and are all laying. When...

    Are these breeds personable?

Our friendliest chickens are our two Speckled Sussexes. They come running when we leave the house, follow us around as we do chores, talk to us, and love to be picked up. Our Buff Orpington is second friendliest, followed by Cinnamon Queen, Easter Egger and a beautiful Wyandotte who earned the...

Private breeders of Bielefelders and Faverolles

I'm interested in future Bielefelders too, and bookmarked this: https://www.poultryshowcentral.com/Chickens.html Perhaps it will have a few useful leads for you. I don't have personal experience with any of them. Just starry-eyed fantasies...

    Best egg-laying breed for kids?

We have a mixed flock of five breeds that we selected for friendliness, laying ability, and cold hardiness. Our Speckled Sussexes from Cackle Hatchery are our friendliest, followed by Buff Orpington. The SSs always come running to greet us and hold still to get picked up. They also have the...

Mixed flock for laying, personal use

Hello! We received our chicks from Cackle five months ago. I am obsessed, as is my eight-year-old. She is out taking chicken photos as I write. We live in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. After some planned chick giveaways and two early losses to predators, we have a happy little...
