How the Heck do You Get this Thing OPEN?!?

When you put the cap on, make sure you don't strip the threads. Did that with one of mine, and it is a PAIN in the a$$ to open/close now. Also, you don't need to close it all the way, just enough to keep the water from free flowing out. I agree, they are much easier to clean than other waterers.

Which of these breeds would you recommend?

Try Javas. We have both Mottled and Black. They are an American Heritage breed that is duel purpose. I have 20 hens right now and get 6-8 eggs a day. In the spring it will pickup to about 16 eggs a day. Some of my hens will get broody, but not all.

How many eggs minimum daily for a roadside farm stand?

Just some quick thoughts. You could try selling at a farmers market. Cost for a spot is minimal, so low overhead. Eggs last several weeks without refrigerating, so you would be able to build up enough inventory to not run out. You might get enough regulars that you could continue to sell...

    Rooster trying to kill us

I had a rooster that was very aggressive with my family. Had to carry a long piece of PVC pipe to keep him away. Was attacked several times. One day as I was bending over to pick up feeding pans, he jumped and hit me in my butt/back of my legs and I lost my balance and fell over as I was...

Official BYC Poll: What humidity do you use in incubation (first 18 days)?

All my chicks are hatched au naturel. Our belief is that mamas know better than us when it comes to hatching chickens.

Should I separate chick from parent?

I have a couple of old, large dog kennel that I will put mama and chicks in for about 7-8 days. Keep them feed and water. After about 5 days, I will let them out in the coop for a couple of hours with all doors closed and all other chickens out. This gives chicks plenty of time to build up...

Ended Official 2020 BYC Halloween HAL Spooky Treats & Halloween Eats Contest!

Started with a jelly roll cake made with chocolate cake and cherries. Sliced the cake and arranged the slices in a bowl. Poured vanilla custard over it and let it set over night in the refrigerator. After it is removed from the bowl, we put green and red colored sugar glaze on top.

Shipping during the current USPS situation.

My family and I are new to raising chickens. We received 25 chicks back at the beginning of August. Chicks where sent from New Mexico and arrived in northern Mississippi. We had a hard time getting the hatchery to send us tracking information, but my wife was able to convince them to email it...

Have 1 hive right now. Will probably expand next year after the chickens are going. May end up with goats or sheep at some point.

    Fencing material

We are new to raising chickens and have enough space to fence off a large area to allow them to roam/forge in. Total length of the fence is 650 ft., and we are going to make it 5 ft tall (going to add an extra foot on the bottom to keep out predators). Looking for suggestions on the type of...

    Introduction

We did a bit of research and thought the Javas would be a good bird to start with and should meet our needs. If things go well, we may look at other birds next year. Got a great deal on a prefabbed wood shed that will be converted. Still waiting on some building materials. Will start build...
