Update: momma still sleeps in the egg box with her babies. She still puffs up and tries to cover them, but they are huge. They are so big, that it takes me a minute to figure out who momma is in the pile. I have been moving them up to roost next to the cozy coop heater the past couple of nights...
I could never eat a dog. I think my dog has the intelligence of a 2-3 year-old human. He doesn't speak English, but we share our own little language. He gestures with his eyes and movements to tell me when he wants something. He feels happiness, sadness, and anxiety, and he dreams at night. He...
To clarify, I also should say that I appreciate posts with prayers and blessings as I take it as a wonderful kindness. I just get uneasy when religious comments seem judgemental or seem to imply that everyone should/does have the same beliefs.
Yep! Bacon is magic:lau. I stopped eating meat for a month when I was a teenager after seeing my husband shoot a squirrel. But, then I really started craving a hot dog and that was the end of that.
Yikes...I hope I didn't break any rules with my debate. I must say, though, I do feel a little uneasy when some makes a religious statement as I am not religious.
I agree, probably not the best place to try to convince people that eating meat is wrong. I am an animal lover and I do sometimes feel a little guilty, but I love me a good hamburger or salami from time to time. My chickens are primarily pets, and I found eating chicken a little difficult after...
I have noticed before when we have had long stretches of subzero weather and i put a heat lamp in to keep water thawed that the chickens start laying again. I am not a huge fan of having eggs in winter though, because while I am at work the eggs have frozen and my last flock developed an egg...
Good point. My cartons go through an organized rotation, too. Only once in awhile do I notice an egg standing up. Usually they have been ones from older hens with thinner shells. My easter eggers have always had thinner shells for some reason. Used to have a guinea hen and you practically needed...
I discard eggs once they stand up on end in water. I consider them old by then. I don't check them that way normally...only notice if boiling. If I crack them and the air cell is big I toss them, too. I believe the air cell makes them float when the egg gets old and loses moisture and the air...
I might be totally wrong here, but that looks normal to me. I have only raised about 50 chicks over the years, but lots of times the feathering has been uneven as it is coming in. My bantam cochin roos had funky feathers when they were growing in and they are just beautiful now.
My bird that was scalped frequently shook her head when she walked around as if she was trying to shake something off. She did it for the rest of her life. My guess is she probably had numbness and/or tingling from nerve damage. She didn't seem unhappy at all though. I think her wound was much...
