It’s been a raining few days here in Southern Indiana, and the chicks had no clue what to do when encountering their first storm the other week. They’d only been out in the enclosure for about 3 days and still hadn’t grasped the concept of coop wire = no entrance. They would fly into the wire...
WE GOT OUR FIRST EGG TODAY!!!!:woot:clap:wee:celebrate
We’re not sure who layed it - Nancy’s comb is a brighter red but Jo did have that crazy behavior a few days ago, so who knows. We’re proud of them both anyways! It’s small and it’s brown and it’s perfect, here’s a picture!
Hey! Thanks for replying! Unfortunately I didn’t get a video but she seemed to resolve it herself as it hasn’t happened since I posted this. We did get our first egg today, but we don’t know who layed it, so if it was Jo, that could’ve contributed to the behavior, but if not, I guess I’ll just...
It’s been awhile! All is well here in the Happy Hart flock. Since the run won’t be here until early August, we moved the chicks into a very big box with a half sand, half woods chips deal. They’ve mamaged to knock their “roost” down about 50 times in the week they’ve been in there! But they’re...
Looks like a pullet to me - usually by 14 weeks they have more of a comb and bigger tail feathers. We have an EE that has those almost-waterfall tail feathers but she’s a proud hen.
We have a 20 week old, one-eyed hen named Jo in our flock who lost her eye to a predator about 4 weeks ago. Recently, it’s started to open a little and glitter black in the sunlight, but we’re not sure if that’s because she still has an eye or what. Anyways, this morning, I went to let them out...
Miss Lucy is doing much better! Unfortunately, it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire with them, and as Lucy has been recovering, one of our dogs slipped past us through the doors leading into the room we keep our chicks in and got ahold of Gammy for a split second. She acquired two...
It’s been a while since I’ve been sick recently. But I’m not the only one - our poor Lucy started showing signs of lethargy and stood around in a little puffed-up ball a few days ago. After a little digging around on the internet, we decided it was most likely Cocci as a result of both the...

We have some happy, pretty birds here in the Hart Flock! They are fast getting feathers at 3 weeks old and we hope we’ll have the new coop and run up before they are 6 weeks...
Yeah, we knew the walls would protect them from the worst of the elements, but we’re later the inside with plywood mainly to attach the roosts and nesting boxes to, but if it gives them some more warmth and protection from predators, I guess far be it from us complaining!;) Thank you for your...
I came back yesterday after a mere three days to find my little chicks looking almost 2x the size they were when I left. I was too busy admiring them to get pics, but I’ll post some soon. Today, I went out to handle them, and Goose, Gammy, and Queenie have kinda warmed up to me, the four dark...
I had to go away for the weekend and leave my chickens, and I miss them already! I got some quality time in with Nancy and Jo with some scratch grains, but have left it in my family’s hands to handle the chicks (such a tough job, I know). I don’t know how I’m going to cope when I go back to...
Had to do the butt checks today. Chicks were less than enthused but small enough to handle, big girls were not enthused and did not hide that fact. I’ll have to have help to check again, more thoroughly. Nancy and Jo spent some time eating seeds and mealworms out of my hand today, which Jo...
I lied! After the last post, we got some excitement when we let ALL the girls out for supervised free range time. I was apprehensive to how Nancy would react, but they did really well! It was the Little Girls first time outside and they were loving it. They stayed in their separate groups for...
Not much happened today in the realm of the chickens. I didn’t get to spend as much time as I wanted with them, but I temporarily housed the chicks in the horse barn while I cleaned their bin and we changed the layout so that their water is now hanging.
And unfortunately, we had to switch...
So many updates! But I had to, since Duchess doesn’t only peck at me - they’ve been outside doing some integration time and she ran to the side of the bin to peck at Nancy through the plastic! Nancy pecked back, of course, but I’ll definitely be curious to see how their relationship develops...
And on a completely different note, Duchess has decided to become a little snot and peck at your fingers if you try to take her out of the bin. I sincerely hope this behavior does not continue into adulthood.
So the coop situation.
As you might know, we got our chickens pretty abruptly. This left us little time to do any research or anything on coops. Hindsight is 20/20 they say - and that is so true. Looking back on it, we should have either just built a coop ourselves (which we are preparing to...
The Little Girls got new digs today! Since Duchess and Gammy will fly out and perch in the edge of the bin without those wire shelves in top, and they goop up their water with shavings and poo, we moved them into a higher bin that’s longer and separated a partition for their food and water that...
