Original flock attacking new layers eggs

I've got 7 ISA browns in my original flock & 2 that have integrated and just started laying. On more than 1 occasion now, the originals have attacked the eggs of the 2 new layers. Is this normal? Do they perhaps detect something wrong with the eggs? The new eggs are significantly lighter in...

    Big ol' coops

My flock has grown to 18 chickens and I'm thinking I need to improve upon my existing coop. I'm fully prepared to pull down the entire thing and start fresh, but Im having a really hard time finding something appropriate for that many birds. Especially with winter coming (I'm in Charlotte NC...

    New chicks not matriculating

lol on the "matriculate" observations. I was questioning whether to use that word or not when I wrote the post. thanks for the info everyone. They're holding their own and just chilling together as what I would guess is a sub-flock.

    New chicks not matriculating

I have 2 chickens that I've been trying to matriculate into my existing flock of 8 for over a month and it doesn't really seem to be working too well. I started by keeping them in a pen in the yard so the existing ladies would get used to them but not be able to hurt them. Then I move a dog...

    Cedar & Chickens - advice

OK, I've seen a lot of conflicting advice everywhere, but the general consensus seems to be that cedar shavings are not good for chickens. OK, I'm on board with that. However, I have a cedar rabbit crate that I was going to use to acclimate my 1.5-2 mo old girls to the outside and before...

    Herbs and other table scraps

I've seen a good amount of mention about people giving herbs to their chickens. Is this simply a treat or does it actually have health benefits? I grow them in my garden, so they may be sampling when they're roaming anyway. What about other table scraps....how do I know what's ok?

Waterer Inside the Coop at Night????

We keep all available at all times too. We've got a group feeder for the food that we put underneath a raised portion of the coop so rain won't ruin it. Then we have 2 5-Gallon Lowe's buckets that we've fashioned with nipples - one stays hanging in the coop at all times and the other is on a...

Too big for the rubbermaid, not quite big enough for the coop

My 1 month old pullets are getting very flighty and outgrowing the Rubbermaid thing I turned into their makeshift home. They're not quite ready to go into the coop with my other 8 chickens, but they are getting too big for that enclosure. What do you all use in the in-between cute-ugly stage...
