No I am not going to let her raise them.
On one of the chicks I had gone out to check and it was on the coop floor cheeping VERY loudly but mom was still on the nest. There was no way that the chick was going to get back in. In a couple more hours it would have been toast. Soooo we decided...
Chicks update
Well it has been an interesting hatch.
Day 20 came and went with zip action,
I was beginning to wonder about the fertility of the roo, although I had seen the bulls eye on an egg that had been slipped in and incubated for a couple of days.
In any event, I did not see my...
Since the next boxes are attached to the wall 24 inches up, bringing food/water close to mom is going to be tough:)
Today is day 19 and I will have a cardboard box (one side open) with starter food and a water and lots of shavings and I am hoping that when mom and chicks get to ground they use...
Interesting... Nest box does have a lip on it.
So to the point of letting mom do the raising of the little ones. I have ramps going in and out of the coop. What do you to provide for the need of the chicks? How would you recommend providing the starter food and water for the little ones once...
My concern with leaving her on the next is that a chick will hatch and then fall out and not be able to get back in. This would probably happen at the most inopportune time and either the chick would die of exposure or mom would leave the nest and the rest of the eggs not hatch. What would...
Well this is our first hatch and I find that I still have a few questions even after tapping into the collective wisdom of this awesome site!
I have a buff Orpington hen and she started sitting on about 9 eggs. It was difficult to catch the actual number. She is normally a very sweet hen but...
I used sound board from home depot and made my Roo is his own bachelor pad. I put him in every night and then do not let him out until 7am. He crows in there starting at 5:15am every morning but the neighbors can not hear him since he is so muffled.
He seems to crow a lot when the hens...
I have a small flock (8 hens) and just recently got a rooster. He is a fine fellow, inexperienced and clumsy but hopefully his performance will improve with time. I had not had him more than a week before I got a letter from the county saying that some neighbor had complained. When I called...
Thanks for all the advice.
I think I am going to go with either a Black Orpington ro Austrolorp rooster for the flock. My main focus is eggs but I want a dual purpose bird and plan on eating some on a regular basis.
Thanks again for the advise, this site is an incredible wealth of information.
Thanks.
I have opportunity to get a young Jersey Giant roo, and am debating whether to go that direction or get a black orpington rooster.
hoping to access someone who has done it.
I found one person on here who crossed a Jersey Giant and Brahma. Looked like she processed them at 12 weeks...
I am a newbie to the chicken raising game and am enjoying it more than I thought I would.
I began my flock with 4 buffs last spring. This spring I still had four buffs and lots of eggs. I did recently lose a hen due to unknown causes just last week .
In any event I want to expand my flock...
