hi Judy how did your chicks turn out? I just hatched (incubator) 7 maran/silkie cross eggs (silkie papa) and got 6 black/white tuxedo looking chicks and one pure black, clean legged tiny little one. Would love to know if you got any extra fluffiness, since the 6 are much fluffier than the one🤷🏼‍♀️

My least favorite part? Having a raccoon or the neighbors dog kill one. The heartbreak is so horrible that I find myself being irrationally overprotective (as a mother hen) with the survivors.

My EE’s don’t look like EEs either. One looks black and white speckled much like a barred rock. One is black with a green and purple sheen, one is almost white. Probably someone “got in the henhouse” at the hatchery🤣 still, we love them all, right?

I have found that occasionally a hen will lay an egg unusually small or oddly shaped. That egg is very long for its circumference. I would think it is from a very young hen and is something of a fluke. It would be interesting to see if you continue to get such pointy eggs🤣

I built one exactly like yours. The only problem I have is something digging under the wire (I buried it all around the outside of the run) and eating all the chicken feed. Much better than eating all the chickens.

Any idea what happened? Disease or raccoon? It’s difficult to tell from the photo, were they intact or missing their heads?
