Eggs moved to improvised incubator. It appears there are only 2 left with babies, as I candled them in place. I didn't see any movement, but we are going to try anyway.
The broody hen is out with the other girls. Maybe she knew something we didn't.
I told my other half I want an incubator...
The chick did not make it and the hen has not.come.back.to the nest, so I guess all the eggs are done too. It is so devastatingly heartbreaking. My husband and I have decided to look into an incubator for the future.
It would be nice to have chicks without drama, but that doesn't seem possible.
Today is day 21 for my hen that has been broody for several months. When the coop opened this morning she went out, and 3 hours later has not came back. We removed 2 dead chicks from the nest, one was still in the...
I was looking for info on something and came across your thread. Now that I have read everything, I can't help but feel you gave her a better life, with lots of love. I hope she was with you a long time.
This has been chaos for sure. There are now no hens sitting, thank goodness. The voyeur has the very first 2 chick hatched Friday, she slept outside the coop last night to my dismay, but they are fine. My original momma hen and her sister have come off the nest this morning and are team...
Can we skip the middle man, just bring them directly to my house, I will offer them a fabulous last meal, and my husband can send them to see their aged relatives.
This morning everyone seems good, 1 black and 2 blonde with each of the bonus Moms, and my original broody has 4 blondes and 3 black chicks, 2 more hatched during the night! Of the original 12 eggs I set, that is 6 total born. Since the hen still on the eggs doesn't have the babies born Friday...
I am so glad to hear your lady is improving!
I have a neighbor about half a mile away who posts on Facebook she will take in raccoons and possums that need rehoming. I have never heard of a racoon splintering wood, must be a behemoth Raccoon! Our coop is built with 2x4 and 2x6's, and we have a...
I am hoping I am over thinking this, but need reassurance or guidance for corrections. Let me start with I am in the Panhandle of Florida, it was 87 today, but we are having unseasonably cool weather tonight, 55 degrees. 4 weeks ago I had a hen go broody, (of course she did, I had 28 2 week old...
It wasn't a hen I knew was broody at any rate. All of my girls are 1 year old, so I suspect we are all learning together. My instinct was to protect the wee one. I will post pictures soon. Fluffed out and up on it's feet, I feel optimistic.
I honestly forgot to look for more empty shells, because I was too worried about the just hatched baby getting care. I do have it written down what eggs she had, so we will do a tally in a day or two.
Update. Just found these two under another hen. I suspect the blond, very vocal chick may be Banana's. The other is a obviously just born turken chick. Nadia's baby. I added a Mason jar of hot water wrapped in a towel with it into the brooder to keep an eye on.
Banana, our Leghorn came from Tractor Supply last spring, but our EE came from a small local feed store, and I feel pretty confident they are mutts, from a hen who laid green or blue eggs, and just called EE's. Banana was names for her yellow legs which is hard to see in the picture. Mr. Peter...
Our first hatched chicks from our flock. Dad is a Barred Rock, and the 2 shell broken were a white one from Banana, our Leghorn, and a pale almost pink egg from Speckles, an Easter Egger. A little surprised, I thought read that the leghorn mix would be gray with ghost barring. Yet here we are...
