    Missing bird after fox encounter

Had a couple missing after a recent fox attack. One showed up within the hour (albeit missing a large chunk of skin). The other I hunted hours for before finding her sitting in some tall grass by the road. She seemed to have pulled a muscle running and couldn’t walk more than a few steps at...

Feed costs rising! Transitioning to different feed. *Questions*

I’ve used PP layer on and off. Could be entirely coincidence, but those times have seemed to correlate with getting weaker shells. Last bag I bought was really heavy with molasses for some reason. Since the PP comes in 40 pound bags there’s only about a 50 cent difference between it and DuMor...

    Chickens were attached

Could be another fox. Have ran off at least three different ones during the day over the last month or so here (thankfully with only one hen injured and recovered). It’s kit rearing season, so they’re out and about more in the day right now.

Self Sufficient Breeding vs. Dual Purpose Breeding

Ah, okay. My thinking was that while I don’t really know what my chickens are eating at a given time, I pretty much know what plants, insects, etc are plentiful here and wondering what particular things might still be around in the winter. I’m not religious, but I can see what you’re saying...

Self Sufficient Breeding vs. Dual Purpose Breeding

I’m in Kentucky, so a pretty similar climate to you. Would you mind detailing what your birds eat in the winter to sustain themselves? If not here, is there another thread where you talk about that? I think that would be really helpful info, even for folks who don’t free range as supplemental...

Female egg laying bird started crowing this morning

My OEGB mix hen will crow outside my windows every once in a while when her requests for feed aren’t being responded to fast enough.

Chick with tiny wings, just growing slowly?

One of my EE “pullets” stayed smaller than the rest for a long time. While the others were gaining size and feathers, it basically stayed looking like a day old puffball running around. Also ate a lot like yours. Grew very slowly compared to the others, but got there eventually.

    Any artists out there?

LOL, no. I’m the S&S mod with the axe avatar.

    Any artists out there?

This made me do a double take before my brain realized I’d saw your thread on BF yesterday. You do excellent work. 👍

    Trying to identify this chicken

Many thanks. These are fertile, so they should if nothing happens. The rooster paid her no attention until recently so this will be her second time being broody with fertilized eggs. The last ones got eaten by something. I’m in the sticks, so predators are plentiful. She’s decided to lay a...

    Hello

Incubator. A Lyon Turn-X. Found it in the storage building where it had been sitting since a relative bought it at a yard sale or something over a decade ago and figured I’d give it a shot. The heat lamp was just to make sure everybody was dry before switching to a “mama heating pad” I...

    Trying to identify this chicken

Hi. Had this stray show up last year and looking to find out what she is. Looking at pictures I’m thinking maybe OEGB or a mix, but not sure. Behavior: Very friendly and very vocal. Frequently broody (sitting on eggs she laid on my porch right now). Flies well and has out-maneuvered all the...

    Hello

Think I’m supposed to post an introduction, so hello. In Kentucky. Have Easter Eggers, Barred Rocks, and Amberlinks. Just hatched my first chicks (14 of 18 so far). Looking to get quail and possibly ducks this year.
