I have a brand new layer who seems to be egg bound. I have done everything I can to try to get that egg out and help her but nothing is working. I do plan to cull her - but should we eat her too? Could the fluid in her abdomen make her unhealthy to eat? She is only a leghorn so there wont be...
mmm kung pao!
Yes, I would like the larger body size. I have some RIR that are from a different hatchery than my BR and the size difference is amazing. And I have two BRs from different hatcheries and their size is quite different.
Looks like most of the breeders listed above ship only...
I really think its something with this particular hatch because the red broilers from the same hatchery last summer turned out great. Hard to say what is going on!
Well since my red broilers seem to be dropping like flies I need to find another type of meat bird. Can anyone recommend a source for Delawares or white rocks? I am okay with a slow grow out. We tried cornish cx and it just didn't work well with our suburban yard set-up.
Thanks!
our third red broiler from this hatch just died. Thats two this week plus the one that died day of hatch on Dec 14. I don't know what is up with this group of red broilers. I have never lost young chickens like this before!
I did red broilers last july and Austin broke every record for drought and days with temps over 100 degrees and that lasted well into late September. I think it affected the growth of my broilers. In the heat the birds drink more and eat less, so you get less weight gain I assume.
I really liked the batch of red broilers that I did in July. Yes, they grow out longer but they are a pleasant bird and taste great! I hope this batch gets itself together!
supermommy486, did you get the red broilers as part of the special pricing they had about 1 month ago? I got some on Dec 14, I drove there as well, and one died that very day (never lost a chick before). A couple of them are pretty small right now. This batch doesn't seem as robust as the...
Yes, that is correct! Or you can freeze him and then include the days of rest after you take him out to thaw. We are eating one of our previously frozen chickens tonight and I took him out on Wed.
So I have tried red broilers and have cornish cx going now which will be ready next week. I would like to try a dp chicken next. My set-up can accommodate 10 meaties. I live in the city and only have a 1/4 of an acre. I keep 11 layers in a fenced side yard and do not mix them with my...
They started off at 28% for 4 weeks and then went to 20% till 11 weeks. I personally feel that every chicken (dp layer and meaties) that I get from this particular hatchery is smaller than usual. That probably sounds odd but I have layers from various hatcheries plus some from this hatchery...
I raised red broilers from Ideal and at 11 weeks the hens only dressed out between 2-3 lbs. The rooster was 4.1 lbs. I kept 2 of the scrawniest hens until 16 weeks and they dressed around 4lbs. They lived their last month among my layers and ate 16% feed (so maybe they could have been...
I just did my daily chicken duties and my nose is numb! I know Texans are supposed to be a hardy group but we sure don't like the cold! Its 22F out there with the wind chill and the sun hasn't hit my yard yet. Brrrr!
But I will take this weather over what we went through this summer...the...
