Would you eat an egg-bound hen?

I have a brand new layer who seems to be egg bound. I have done everything I can to try to get that egg out and help her but nothing is working. I do plan to cull her - but should we eat her too? Could the fluid in her abdomen make her unhealthy to eat? She is only a leghorn so there wont be...

    Good source for Delaware chicks?

Well since my red broilers seem to be dropping like flies I need to find another type of meat bird. Can anyone recommend a source for Delawares or white rocks? I am okay with a slow grow out. We tried cornish cx and it just didn't work well with our suburban yard set-up. Thanks!

Your favorite DP chicken for meat?

So I have tried red broilers and have cornish cx going now which will be ready next week. I would like to try a dp chicken next. My set-up can accommodate 10 meaties. I live in the city and only have a 1/4 of an acre. I keep 11 layers in a fenced side yard and do not mix them with my...

    Finisher for Cornish cx?

What is the ideal finisher for Cornish CX? I can get 20% or 16% and of course the latter is much cheaper. They are 6 weeks old. Thanks!

Are we on track? 1.5 lbs at 21 days

I checked the welp hatchery chart and they report their cx should be around 1.9 on day 21. My cx range from 1.5 - 1.3. I feed them 24%. Are we on track? This is my first time raising cx. Thanks!

Red Broiler hens look a wee bit scrawny 2 days before D Day

My red broiler cockerel looks great (love how I got just one roo out of 8 birds in a st run) but some of the hens look pretty small. They are 11.5 weeks old. Their harvest date is this Saturday. If I hold off on harvesting some of the hens, how long can they go? Has anyone kept a red broiler...

    Withdrawal period for medicated starter

I purchased some medicated starter for my meaties as the feed store didn't have what I normally buy. Their harvest date is Oct 8. When should I withdraw the medicated feed? Its the purina chick starter. Thanks! Ashley

    when to process red broilers

Hello! My red broilers (this is my first broiler experience) will be 12 weeks old on Oct 19. I have a straight run and live in the city - when will the roosters start crowing? It would be best to process before the roosters crow. I have only kept layers and so I have zero rooster experience...

28% Protein feed, is it better?

I found a local source for 28% wild game feed. They also have 20% protein layer pellets. Would the 28% be better for the meaties? I have them on the purina chick starter and they are almost 3 weeks. The price difference is $2 per 50lb bag. The 28% is $13. Has anyone tried both ways? Thanks!

    Squinty eye

I have a baby chick (5 days old) that is squinting one eye. The eye doesn't look damaged at all. I do have a fan blowing on their brooder - I am in Texas and its 100+ in my garage. I moved the fan so that they are no longer in the breeze from it. Should I put something on the eye? Thanks!

    Mareks? Help

This morning we found one of the girls laying on the bottom of the coop floor. She cannot walk. She is a year old EE. She is unable to stand and is on her butt with her legs sticking straight out. Her comb is oddly bright red, super bright red. I have her separated. I dont know if she was...

    Impacted Crop, flock aggression

A few days ago we noticed one of our lower rung girls had a huge crop and could not walk. I tried to help her out of the run and suddenly the flock was on her, not just pecking but actually coming at her with their feet, etc. It was vicious. I whisked her away to the garage and spent 2 days...

10 wk pullet was scalped - HELP

I have a sweet sweet pullet that was somehow scalped today. I can see her brain through a thin layer of tissue. The bleeding has stopped and I have put triple antibiotic and guaze on the wound. I dont think stitches could help her because there is no extra skin to pull up for sewing. Any...

    Solar LED light for coop

I need to nudge my ladies into better production - we are at 25% now with the loss of daylight. I was wondering if anyone had a LED solar slight that they used and liked? I can't run electricity and was hoping for a solar power light that would last just a few hours into the dark and then lose...

    Am I a Roo?

This chicken was sold to me 3 weeks ago as a 14 week old pullet. She is taller than my 6 month ladies, flighty, and just weird. I have a feeling he/she is a very young rooster. She is supposed to be an EE/BR mix. She does have some odd brown feathers in a few places. Its hard to get a photo...
