Finally looking forward to nocturnal visitors to the coop!

My husband bought a game camera for me for Christmas! He did his own research (gulp) and bought a Delta 8 stealth cam (no glo) It's set to video, and so far, has only caught me, but I know the little rat ******* raccoons will be visiting shortly!!!

Can you change their roosting behavior??

I only have bantams, but an acquaintance was looking for a good home for her 3 chickens....I thought they were all silkies. She brings over 2 silkies and one big ***** Americana, lol. For someone who has only bantams, a standard chicken is gigantic. My coop isn't really meant for a big girl...

Sometimes being a "little" chicken helps you find unconventional hiding places!

I built my girls an extended run so they had more room to do their chicken thing (I was losing too many of them to predators during free range moments). However, an hour or so before dusk, sometimes I let them out to roam. They had been in there for a week,so I took a chance and let my...

So we adopted a new dog...and now I know what his flaw is: he's a runner....

We adopted Sir Wallingford or "Wally" about 3 days ago.. He is a min pin/dachshund mix, and he is UNCUT, and about 2 years of age. The family we adopted him from lived on a super busy street and he was prone to digging out and escaping, so they were worried that he would get hit by a car. We...

My Japanese bantam chick (to me) lays impossible tiny eggs....so can ya beat that? Pic included!

I believe Betsy is a Japanese bantam? that whole mixed bag thing from Ideal poultry, lol. She is my super friendly girl with lots of pluck...but not a very big egg. I heard this is about right for their breed? Anyhow, they are tiny, about the size of a penny or marble, and have NO yolk. Zippo...

Would love any of you to "like" my Facebook page: "The Fit Green Chicken"

Amongst my friends here in Texas, I am the only one known for (illegal) chickens and I totally rave about them, but only a few can relate, lol. If you have FB, would certainly appreciate a "like" for "The Fit Green Chicken" This page is dedicated to clean recipes, solar cooking, ideas for...

Predators were enjoying my Free Range Ladies. So....we built an extended run (with an interesting tu

I have only bantam pullets. My coop is illegal as all hell, and I have made the mistake of becoming that "Crazy Chicken Lady" who names the members of her flock, only to be sorely dismayed when the Predator/Prey relationships rear their ugly heads and the chickens come out (dead) last. The...

1000 squats in 20 days challenge, anyone? Its FREE, lol! Start date in September?

I actually did this one in July...it was something my friends and i decided to do on FB to keep accountable..I wrote my squats for the day on my bathroom mirror. It equals to about 50 squats a day..totally do-able. And do squats do a booty good? YES!

Have you ever loved your coop so much that when you moved, you dismantled it and took it with you?

My coop is illegal, in a hard to access area, but I designed the whole thing, and built 99.9% of it on my own. It is a testament of hard work, detemintation, creativity, and every other word to pat myself on the back, lol. We plan on moving in a couple of years, but I'm almost frantic...

Anyone else Crossfit or work out to Insanity?

For the last year and a half, I've been really hitting my health and fitness hard, it's partially why I have chickens (for the eggs and companionship!!). I do not even care about weight anymore....it's pretty much about health, strength and maintaining muscle. I like Insanity, don't get to it...

Okay, these are frizzle mutts. But what I thought was a hen is now making me wonder if its a dude??

So I bought some chickens off of Craigslist...they were advertised as silkie mixes, very young. Well, the post had been up for awhile, so they were supposedly 5 weeks old. No new photos. I agreed to take all of them (including the roosters) if they would lower the price. I am no chicken...

    Anyone here a fellow crossfitter?

Just wondering. Been crossfitting for a little over a year. Been working on both diet and body this past year and am loving the progress I have made!

Who else has a solar oven?

I have a Global Sun oven for a little over a year....love it to pieces. Best purchase. I've docked stews, whole chickens, bread, quiche, cookies, hardboiled eggs, rice, beans, whatever else I can throw in there. In the Texas summer, this proves to e awesome because I don't heat the kitchen up...

Ok: land dweller or hawk that picked off my favorite girl?

My girls have been getting hammered this year.... .1st one: my fault: didn't close the run door, so I'm assuming a raccoon helped itself to thankfully only one girl, instead of the other 9. Goodbye Salt. 2nd one: something freaked my girls out at night, so they didn't troop back to the coop at...

Is there a FB page for us chicken people? "Chickens Who Cross Roads"

don't get me wrong! I love byc. But sometimes I just want to keep that flow of conversation faster....i started "chickens who cross roads" FB page last year, but it didn't take off....I'm talking to myself! Which I don't mind, but anyhow, if you're FB friendly, join in!

One of my 3 month old chicks decided to shack up with the old gals tonight in the coop. Separate Imm

I have 6 "old gals", about a year old....obviously pecking order has been established. I have 8 new chicks, hatch date of 1/9/12. So about 3 months old. The new girls have been growing up in an old pack and play but the weather here in Texas has been very mild. For the past couple weeks, I've...

What surprises did you get when you ordered the chick "special"?

I actually didn't order the full special from Ideal....just 6 feather footed whatevers and 3 clean legged whatevers. Last year I bought 25 chicks, some I put specificity into, but the rest I ordered assorted. And because I can't keep the boys, I ended up giving away a lot of my specifieds...

So one of your ladies did not come back to the coop before nightfall....did they ever return?

I let my girls out of the coop to do what chickens do....hang out in our garden and scratch around in the woods. I get a knock in the door about an hour later....one of my neighbors ask if I had lost a chicken.....apparently, one of my bantam girls hopped the 5 ft fence, crossed the road, and...

Thinking about Adding to my flock.....but I am at max capacity now.

Hold up, before you start sniping me about overcrowding, read my post. I said i was only thinking about it. Right now, I have 8 bantam ladies, in a 4X6 coop, with a 12 X 6 run. They usually have free-range time during the day for a couple of hours in the woods that surround their coop every...

Are people ever surprised that you own chickens?

I guess we all do it....whenever we meet someone, we think we have a general idea of what a person is "like" based on what they look like. Sad, but true. I know that sometimes I throw people for a loop when I happily claim that I own chickens and I built my own coop....I guess they don't think...
