Review by '' on item 'Orpington'

We have had 2 Buff Orpingtons in our flock, and both were just the same. They could be bossy at times, I think it was because they were often broody. We don't heat or light our coop so the girls don't lay much during winter. But when summer comes, I do want the payback of all that feed. My...

Review by '' on item 'Jersey Giant'

Our Jersey was typical of the breed, a big girl and the largest in the flock. That said she was not a bully, very even tempered. She enjoyed being held and never pecked anybody. She would place herself between two other squawking chickens as the peacemaker. If I have a complaint it is that...

Review by '' on item 'Gold Star'

Our Gold Star is a rock star of a laying hen. She not only lays almost everyday in warm weather, she also lays nice large eggs. She is the first to come running when you come near the coop and always squats to be picked up. I will not be getting more chickens when these finally go, but if I...

What kind of pellet gun for squirrels?

There was a time that if I did not shoot a squirrel, I did not have an evening meal. I have no need to shoot them now, but I do shoot the Woodpeckers that keep pecking holes in my house. Gamo on clearance at Cabela's. cone nose pellets.

How do you prevent water from freezing

I also go with the heated dog dish. I cut a circle of plywood and hung it by three chains from the top of the coop. Put the dog dish on that. It is hung high enough that their scratchings do not fowl the water. It works great, and the coop has been as cold as 5 degrees F.

    Battle of the Waterers....

I cut a round piece of plywood and screwed three loops. Hooded up some chain, like what is used on a swingset. Hung it from a roost that goes across the top of the coop. Then I put a heated dog bowl in there. The chains keep the chickens out, and it is high enough they can't get scratchings...

    Too small to winter in?

I have to say the same as Elmo above. I had one of my girls as a teen eaten by a racoon, right through the chicken wire. You need to have hardware cloth. Buffs, are very winter hardy. You can enclose the whole thing, and as long as they get in the coop part at night they will be fine till...

    Cat problem?

Yes, I would just wait and see. Our last batch of chicks were only about 4 weeks and he left them alone, but he had already seen 4 grow, so it wasn't anything new. Tigger is indeed a superhunter, we find leftovers often. Not too keen on his eating small rabbits, but have no problem with him...

    Cat problem?

Hi, I have seen a lot of replies from Chicken people, but not anybody that says they are a cat person. I am that cat person. Our cat Tigger is mean. Actually as far as I am concerned he is related to Satan. He latched onto my hand one time and the only reason he still walks on Gods green...
