Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

Looks like I am in for a year of new experiences/LARGE learning curve, LOL Thank you for the pointers!

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

They are silly creatures! I guess all I can do is prepare, and prepare to be surprised. bty, my little flock was "helping" the neighbor paint his fence this morning as I left for church. No amount of cajoling, pushing, chasing could get them to go back home (they are sooo much better at "come"...

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

oooh! I was planning on expanding my flock a bit, though i don't want 20 turkeys. I know I can sell some, but I want to keep hens and get rid of toms. I know that some of you can tell at hatching which are toms and which are hens, but right now, I am too much of a novice. Is there a video or...

I better get the nest boxes built asap! Thank you for all your help!

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

Actually, a thought occurred: can the tom be in the coop at night if the openings to the nest boxes are too small for him? The boxes will be outside the coop, on an interior wall of my shed with cutouts to enter from the coop. I had intended to build a small coop nearby for him for nighttime...

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

Thank you for the clarification...so the daytime routine can remain the same? I still have three toms and three hens, but two of the toms will be gone the week after Thanksgiving-trading for another hen. Right now, they get along well, sticking together and watching out for one another. I...

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

PS Thank you for your answer. We do have coyotes, but for now, the dogs seem to keep most critters away from the property. They are 5 years old (siblings) and weigh 75 - 80 pounds each, so I hope they continue in that capacity for a while. A beauty to behold when they run together.

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

LOL, re: getting them to go in...SO FAR mine are quite cooperative (bearing in mind that they are 4 months old and completely human imprinted)...I let them out after I feed the horses in the morning, and put them in after I feed the horses at night. They are often waiting for me at the door of...

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

A question from a newbie: were any of the turkeys that you lost cooped at night? Mine currently free range during the day (4 months old) and are cooped at night. I have never seen any owls, nor heard them. I have 2 large dogs who are out all day and several times after dark, though they sleep...

Is it a good idea to keep turkeys around fruit trees or growing pumpkin?

So true and so funny! My six "knock" on the back door when I go in and leave them out! (Only one has ever been in the house - for some tlc while young, and never for more than 5 minutes - but they see the dogs and cat come and go with me, and can't for all their dear little lives, figure out why...

    The troubles of owning turkeys

Mine have a pond. I am excavating (by hand) a very large tree root left from when the pond was dug in 2004. I am currently slow draining to expose enough to get a chain saw in well below water level. What does this have to do with turkeys, you ask? They seem to think that my digging is an...

    The troubles of owning turkeys

My 11 week-old turkeys have flown into trees when out free-ranging, but come down as soon as the rest of the flock (and I)walk away. I had an emergency out of state two weeks ago and my sister-in-law watched the farm. She was afraid to let the turkeys out because she didn't think she could get...

    When to separate turkey poults

That's how I came to the conclusion that these two are males. The three that I am pretty sure are females are also pretty easy. You can see Pepper next to Rebel. She is smaller and her head is very different. I only have one blue slate that I am not sure of. He/she was the largest poult...

    When to separate turkey poults

Thank you again for all your excellent advice! Going to look at traps at Bass Pro and Tractor Supply later. I am attaching the most recent pictures of the two I think are toms. Rebel is the Narragansett and Bingo is the blue slate. Both get very red when excited. Rebel struts more. Bingo has...

    When to separate turkey poults

Probably a stupid question, but is the largest trap the size I need for racoon? My up-close experience with racoons is babies scampering in a tree in my yard when I lived in NJ. Re: start of breeding, so I need to be rid of my extra tom(s?) by mid-late December? This is my first year, so I...

    When to separate turkey poults

One last question, you answered Songster saying that your breeding starts in February. I am 25 miles inland from North Myrtle Beach, SC. When will breeding start for me? In December, my poults will be 5 months old.

    When to separate turkey poults

Thank you! I know from road kill nearby that we have racoons, but have never seen tracks near my pond (and we have abundant crayfish there, as well as frogs and red belly water snakes). I rake leaves daily so I check for tracks almost every day. (Trying to keep the pond clear until I get the...

    When to separate turkey poults

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! What size trap do you use? What predators should I be trapping for? I have never seen one, but I know we have possum, and I see the foxes traverse the far fence line almost daily. They used to come closer, but my 2 large dogs have almost unlimited...

    When to separate turkey poults

I have the same question: my 6 mixed heritage poults are just 9 weeks old. I think I have at least two toms, based on size and snood, but could have three. I am pretty sure of three hens. So far, all are good together. They have a coop with 96 square feet of space, with roosts. Currently...
