New chicken mom and freaked out.

I was just thinking maybe something about the bag I had wasn’t appealing to them?

Thank you so very much for all the help. I really appreciate that you all took time to post back. I’m going to slowly switch to a different kind of feed, buy a fresh bag of shells, keep a very close eye on them. I’m hoping it was a fluke. They have all done so well. Their feathers are gorgeous...

I’m looking at photos of “speckled eggs”. Ours look nothing like those. Our spots are very tiny and very light in shade. Is it normal for the shell color to fluctuate? Normally, they are a light tan color. There are some that come out lighter brown (very light tan).

Omg. There is the occasional egg with the tiny brown speckles…. Not raised, but the little spots. I’m unclear from the article. Are they saying the tiny spots are too much calcium? Is it always sign of a problem? Thank you for the article. I have done so much researching and I feel like no...

The scratch and peck is the same amount is the one I’m getting. Yes a little pricier. But they really are just pets, eggs are a perk. Thank you for all the explanation. I can’t stand when an animal is uncomfortable!

Also, how much do I give them the calcium citrate? Just ground up? Thank you very much

Why would worm treats cause a shell issue? It was suggested by my neighbor and when researching, it seemed like a good option (for layers too). That one also had lots of pre and probiotic stuff. Do you have a better recommendation?

Are the shell issues dangerous for them? Would all of the hens have the same problem if it was calcium?

Only a couple of times. Should I just be giving them all their shells back? I feel so guilty. Until yesterday all of their shells were so hard, sometimes you could drop them without breaking them. Can I give them some sort of liquid version so they get it in quickly? Is the calcium citrate...

Yes, but I did notice the other day that it looked like it hadn’t been touched much.

I’m not sure which hen it was. I was thinking maybe she was just off balance after the big double yolk. Their eggs are still small and very hard/thick. Harder than a normal egg to crack. So I definitely didn’t think about calcium. If I give her calcium citrate, how much? Can it be any kind?

Yes. But I did notice that it hadn’t been eaten much. It wasn’t wet or anything, could it have gone bad?

I have 3 Buffy’s all about 9 mo. They have all been very hearty and happy. They have laid 1 egg a day for a while now. Yesterday one egg was bigger and I broke it when I picked it up (I’m used to the super thick shells). There were 2 yolks inside. Today there were three eggs in the coup today as...

Not emergency, but new chicken owner questions.

The other thing I am seeing a lot of is that unlike other breeds, buffys in particular will over eat and to take away food in the afternoon or measure their food. how much would a non-buffy eat in a day?

Funnily, we thought Tulip was a rooster for a long while. She just not as round and all her feathers almost seems slightly raised on the edges, where the other girls are totally smooth. I mean, I don't want to body shame her.... but making sure shes ok

Not emergency, but new chicken owner questions.

Hello! I’m new raising my Buffy’s but I have a few questions. 1. Is it normal that one of my girls has “displaced feathers”? Making sure it’s not a deficiency. 2. Hard to tell in photo, but all girls have a slightly dry comb. Just little white lines. Sign of anything? 3. I am shocked by the...

    Red beak/face area

In case anyone finds this thread later… update Just thought I’d update. My Tulip was a hen! Thinking it was a rooster I found him a home. I cried as my husband and daughter took him there. An hour later they said “she thinks it’s a hen!” And brought my Tulip home! All three are gorgeous and...
