Chick hatched swollen legs not standing

Ok. Sounds right. He has dried out a bit…kind of dragging one leg. Can’t tell about the other leg or if the swelling is any better or not. Is the sling the right thing for him - even with swelling? Thanks.

Chick hatched swollen legs not standing

Chick hatched with 2 swollen legs and can’t seem to stand. He hatched more than a day late and needed a little assistance…he was mostly hatched but was turned sideways somehow and one leg slipped out of the shell…so I gently helped by splitting the shell a bit more for him. Good thing too…he...

    Keeping Toms from nesting box

Ok…so I put a board straight across the entrance of 2 of the nest boxes (they are attached to each other side by side and seperated by hardware cloth)… taking the entry down to about 8.5”…depending on how high the straw gets…but I can adjust it if I see it is needed. The width is still about...

    Keeping Toms from nesting box

Ok…thanks. That gives me something to work with. I am going to measure my 2 largest girls…one of the boys (to be sure it’s not the same # 😮) and the openings…and cut some wood to make some changes in size. 👍

    Keeping Toms from nesting box

Thanks for your help. Hmmm…I’m not sure I would be able to cage around the nest boxes. Space is a bit tight in those areas. Maybe I could just make the nest box entrances smaller? One is in the corner of an inside and hardware cloth wall, and the other 2 are inside…along a short wall. I know...

    Keeping Toms from nesting box

Need some ideas to help keep my toms out of the nest boxes when the girls are laying…and just in general. All of my next boxes are on the ground…I have no way to put them up higher. I had one Tom squeeze between a hardware cloth wall and a slanted board…only about 8” of space…to reach the 2...

    Prolapse questions before treating

Hi there! I was at a bit of a loss and disappointed at getting no response. So…Thanks so much for your reply…and I am so sorry your hen is dealing with prolapse. It is nice to know, from your reply, that it was, in fact, prolapse Tilly had. I am SO happy to say she is fine! And thank you for...

    Prolapse questions before treating

Can anyone confirm prolapse from the photos for me? And is it very swollen to your experienced eye? I posted the photos yesterday. Is there no one available to assist?

    Prolapse questions before treating

I had a helper today and was able to get a couple photos. This is my first experience with this type of thing and I have only had turkeys for about a year. I was hoping to be able to post a photo - just so an experienced eye can confirm that this really is a prolapse (?) ((while praying it is...

    Prolapse questions before treating

Thank you. I have been using honey because of it’s wonderful healing properties and to reduce the edema. I have been soaking/cleaning her in warm water with epsom salts, then applying some theracyn and then honey for the past 3 days.

    Prolapse questions before treating

Ok. Thanks for that. Does your experience also involve veterinarian intervention? Taking her has crossed my mind….but I will be worried about the expense and success rate in that instance too.

    Prolapse questions before treating

Thanks…great information. Rethinking the calcium of course…and diet. My intention was to continue my course for a few days, but maybe not the best idea. I know this is not a good situation for her, but still wondering if it’s a ‘nature take its’ course’ thing or if pushing it back in is smarter...

    Prolapse questions before treating

Thanks…kind of a ‘glass 1/2 full’ person though. And I have to try…so can you offer me any help/answers in an effort to save her based on your experience?

    Prolapse questions before treating

About 2 days ago, I noticed my Narraganset hen, about one year old and laying, has a prolapse about the size of a walnut. I have been really sick the past few days and have only been able to handle cleaning her up a bit with warm water, applying theracyn to the area and a little vasoline around...
