Treating sour crop and worms, will this strategy work....?

To anyone dealing with this issue, there are TONS of posts about using Fenbenzadole (wormer) and Miconazol ( antifungal), both off-label for chickens. The antifungal is involved with the sour crop treatment and the wormer for the underlying cause of the sour crop. It took a bit of time to find...

Treating sour crop and worms, will this strategy work....?

Tick tock, how long can a 5 year old hen go without drinking? Thanks to BYC forums advice, am treating her with a syringe of Miconazole 3 ( off label use of anti fungal) and yogurt twice daily, plus apple cider vinegar in her water. But she doesn’t seem to be drinking, and this is day 4 in...

HELP! An animal attacked my hen! WARNING GRAPHIC PICTURES

As awful as this is, she can survive! We had this happen too. We used generous amounts of first aid solution ( get to your feed store/ supplier) and kept her in a dog crate hospital in our basement with lots of TLC and treats. Eventually we took her in the crate to the run so she could...

Integrating Many Pullets to a Small Older Flock

I wanted to report back in after all the help with integrating 6 pullets into an old flock of 6. It took three weeks of evening choreography due to reluctance of pullets to enter run/coop with old girls intimidating. Lots of scratch, a new roost in the coop, moving the new girls from run to coop...

Integrating Many Pullets to a Small Older Flock

So helpful to me, also dealing with integration of pullets ( six, 18-week golden comets) with old flock of six hens ( all 4-5 years.) Our evening scene, such as you describe moving the pullets from run to coop roost is very labor intensive! After just 8 days of this I am worried this is going to...

    Crazy idea?

Thank you all for great advice. All we did was add an extra layer of straw in the coop and keep water available thru some rare near zero temps. Our girls look great and kept laying throughout. :)

    Crazy idea?

In Virginia we are usually ok with unheated coop and temps into the mid teens. BUT end of this week forecast is for an unprecedented minus 7-- a huge change. Is it a terrible idea: to take them off the roost at night and keep them in pet crates for a day in our heated basement? My thought is...

Histoplasmosis !!! Please read !!! Important for all !!

This is undoubtedly the most important posting on BYC. When I got into chickens 4 years ago, I thought I had researched the prospect thoroughly. Unfortunately, for two years I cleaned out the chicken tractor without a face mask. Although I have not been tested, my symptoms mimicked yours. My...

    Time to give up?

Good stuff here. So far we have abandoned the run, which allowed snakes to access coop too. Just letting the girls out here and there so they can access the laying boxes. The one mom and week-old chick are in the brooder filltime. And I bought a snake repellant ( mostly sulfur) to spread outside...

    Time to give up?

Wow, thank you. Some good and new ideas here. I do hate to give in. I do have another question though. When the first setters were killed on the nests, it was night and the big roo right on the roost. He was very aggressive with me, and I had seen him fight off a hawk. Did the snakes get by him...

    Time to give up?

This is our first summer with eggs and we are doing miserably. in the last 2 weeks, black snakes have killed two setting hens and eaten their eggs. Two layers and one mama that successfully hatched out one chick 4 days ago remain. Just now I found another 6 footer in the laying box and...

    Snakes Kill Chickens!

Apparently a virginia thing! Over three nights now we've lost 2 hens to strangling black snakes hiding in the coop, the second ( who knew?) was in the hay in the nesting box. Both setting hens were found dead with wet head and neck, the big clue. Our coop is new and built into the corner of a...
