Thanks for the info, I read the article but I'm afraid I still have questions.
Our set up: We have 3 coops. The 1st holds pheasants and peacocks and is away form the others with no current access to the outside. The 2nd and 3rd coops both open into outside pens built with 6 foot high posts and...
Okay...so we finally caught and eliminated our coon days before going on vacation.
Three days into vacation the lady watching our animals for us calls me and tells me that there is a baby bobcat pestering the ducks. GRRR!!! She got rid of the baby (I'm guessing about 10-12 weeks old baby)...
Dont worry snowflake if we catch it we wont be relocating.
We're now wondering if my brother in law did indeed miss or if the coon is just taking a few days off. Traps still set but eh only thing Im catching is my retardo turkey that thinks she's a duck!
No the nails don't dig into their hands. What the book describes is a hole in a log and then two nails drove at an angle. you drop a piece of tin in the bottom. The coon then puts his hand down through the nails and grabs the tin. The nails are close enough together that the coon cant get out...
Glad you guys like it...I know I'd think it was a whole lot funnier if it wasn't my chickens lol
Yeah...we're all standing in a line firing squad style and no one shoots *rolls eyes*
Thanks for the thing on the traps, I'll look that up.
Great idea on the baby monitor too! We just happen...
if all chickens need that much light to keep laying then I guess I have some weird chickens. Mine laid all through the winter last winter with no supplemental light.
We gave them fresh slightly wilted lettuce and other kitchen scraps though every day so maybe that made the difference
I've been using wet cat food or the dead chicks. Do marshmellows work better?
Unfortunately I have two young children (one is 2 and the other 8 mo) and cant afford to loose the sleep. I've been relying on our dogs to alert me in the middle of the night and they're both older and the hearing...
Has anyone heard of using different traps to catch the coons and had success with that??
For example: the trap set in a log that is discribed in "where the red fern grows" book?? Two large nails and a piece of tin in a hole?
My hubby said he heard of one where yo secure a jar and put...
hmm I'll put in my two cents as well. I never have any lice on my free-ranged birds but they take dust baths every day. I have a spare dog kennel that has a concrete floor and when one got injured I isolated it in there until it healed. When healed I picked it up and immediately got lice all...
One legged chicks are gone...I left them alive at first because most of them were still hopping around balanced on the one leg and acting like nothing had happened ...???? Bizarre....
One that we found has both legs still but the toes got broke...What are her/his chances?
Update:
Night 1 on...
We have several silver laced wyandottes that are about 6 weeks old that were attacked last night by coons (guessing based on evidence), four of them were dead this morning and we noticed this evening that 5 have only one leg left. We are guessing that the coon jerked them through the chicken...
Wyo... where are you located in wyo? You want to try some one legged chicks??
