Woke up this morning to "sweetheart, your Rosebud is limping"... !!! :(
The hen is approximately 7 months old. Rest of flock is mixed ages, one ancient buff orpington, 2 4 yr olds, 1 3 yr old, and two more 7 month olds. We think she laid her first egg earlier this week, but not 100 percent...
On Saturday morning I noticed one of my baby Lionheads had a hurt claw, it was bleeding a little, but didn't look that bad to me. He seemed otherwise fine (but prey animals always try and hide it).
Saturday evening when I went to put him away ( he hangs out on the deck during day) I noticed...
This little baby australorp seems to have a hurt leg
she's moving around, but seems to be having trouble with that leg, she did eat the food a little then she walked back to the light
both legs seem weak
dipped her beak and made her drink some water
the pen is lined with the blue tarp...
Background - Yesterday evening noticed hen was listless, sleeping in middle of yard. Today still acting listless, was able to catch easily. Vent had a foul smell, swollen, black and crusty.
Treatment so far - Rinsed with clean water, pulled out a broken egg that smelled terrible, looked like...
Chicken details
Pullet 'Cinnamon Queen' from Cackle
9 months age
Been laying eggs about 2 months
Healthy, friendly, vigorous hen, she's a great forager, curious and easy going
Food is lay pellets and we provide free choice oyster shell.
Her eggs look like this.... She lays very regularly about...
My hens were all born either this last spring or summer so none of them are a year old yet. It looks like some of them are molting, and some of them aren't. The ones who are molting seemed to have started their molt kind of late its more winter now than fall. Do pullets commonly molt in the 1st...
any welsummer breeders know whats the typical age for point of lay? I've got two pullets around 6 months in age. They're about the same size as my almost 8 month olds who've been laying for awhile. They cluck and sing and have red combs, but don't squat and are very skittish.
I'm told these are four months old and from Cackle Hatchery. All were sexed as pullets.
This is Licorice
Jelly Bean
Candy Cane
Lemon Drop
I took the pictures at night when they were on the roost (much to their irritation) so the flash is a little strong.
What do you think? All...
I've got an approximately four month old speckled sussex named Poppy with a persistent sour crop problem and I need help!
Thursday of last week I noticed that she had a swollen crop at the end of the day (not always that unusual for my birds if they've had treats that afternoon, scraps from the...
My 19 wk old buff orp pullet Toffee Nut is limping. I thought she was favoring her right leg a little yesterday so I checked her all over, she seemed fine. No sign of bumble foot that I could tell, both feet look the same to me. Today she was noticeably limping. I don't know what could be...
I picked up four 'three month old hens' this last week from a woman asking for help because her neighbor had a 'chicken eating dog'. She said she had a Dark Brahma, Light Brahma, GLW, and Americauna. I'm pretty sure that the Dark Brahma is actually a Speckled Sussex, it's definitely NOT a Dark...
I rehomed my roosters. My hens still aren't laying, but they're getting close and they seem happier without that uppity rooster jumping on them all the time.
Two nights ago I was bring out the treats and one my reds squatted for me and let me pet her! They've been a little standoffish since...
We know we've got coyote, we've saw one in the river bed and we've heard them at night. Neighbor killed a possum last February. Haven't seen any evidence of raccoons in the area, but I'm sure there are some. What kind of track/paw print is this? We found it by one of the fruit trees a day after...

I'm kind of surprised by the no nest boxes and no roost in the coop, also this sounds like more work than I spend cleaning, but we're 'attempting' deep litter. I did rake up the chicken run this...
I've had my 3 four week olds in their own pen inside the chicken run for a week now. The older girls are 10-13 weeks mixed. At night the littles went into their brooder box in the coop with the big girls. A few times I've let them come out to mingle while supervised and everyone mostly minded...
I found a spot at the back of my coop/run that looked a little like something tried to dig under it. Our run is attached to the coop so the screen runs right up to the edge of the back, but the back and side where nest boxes are is outside of the run while the entrance and other side are inside...
