My daughter showed modern game bantams and light brahma bantams in 4-H. She won reserve featherleg with one of the brahma hens. We decided not to enter the open show. I was also disappointed in the birds exhibited, but it was not the fault of the superintendent. I feel he tries to do the...
I have 9 two-week old silkie chicks for sale. They are by a blue rooster out of blue, splash and partridge hens. I know at least a few are mixed blue/partridge, the others should be black and splash. I sold all my silkies, and hatched these out for the heck of it! Lines include Golden Egg...
I'm not saying I would suggest you do this, but I have had eggs over two months old that I found (forgot I had collected them, and they got shoved in a corner of my storage shelf) and incubated. Most of them hatched. I would not suggest people do this, nor eat eggs that old that weren't stored...
Dogs that run loose are a danger to your birds... period. If it is legal to shoot, do it. To ease your conscience, give the owners warning first... if you can find who owns the dogs. Most times, I find dog owners will not admit their dogs run loose or kill. Dogs will not stop once they...
Also, I agree with silkiechicken...
don't intervene too much or it will take FOREVER to get the situation straightened out. Try the treats... they are easily distracted!
Yes, do try putting her in at night, and then check first thing in the morning. I've had to do the same thing. It is a pecking order rearrangement situation.
I also find if I throw in a good amount of "treats" like seeds, bread, scratch (I don't use scratch, but that's a whole 'nuther...
What I would do is get some Calf Manna... it has anise in it as well. Gives it that licorice smell. Crush it into a fine dust and sprinkle it on the new grit, and mix some in. It will give it the same smell, and help them adjust to the new grit. Kinda like switching feed. Mix it until you...
I think you'll find that hatchery Marans are going to turn out like other hatchery birds. They are not selectively bred, so although they are genetically Marans, most will never lay very dark eggs like those from breeders.
We had some hatchery Marans, and a few layed some dark eggs, I'd say...
Here is my lavender hen with her keets.... she hatched 17 in her nest she made in my flower bed! Three light lavender hatched... I wonder who is carrying that gene?!
Welcome to BYC!!! You'll love it!
I'll PM you later about this... there is a vet up here that will send birds to Cornell for a necropsy. I had one done this spring.
I have plans to show them next year. We are starting slow, and trying to acquire some good birds. Can someone show me some pics of a good head vs. a poor head? Should they be as heavy in the brow as a Brahma? I am trying to picture it as described by the Standard...
I come from a show horse background, so when I got into poultry I found it hard to adjust to not having pedigrees/registration papers to confirm lineage and breeding. Although, that being so, I have seen some people do really underhanded things like switching papers, switching foals, faking...
I'm not sure if I want to keep the partridge, so I'll just comment on the blacks as well. Another thing I question is the leg color on one of the cockerels. His shanks and toes are a dusky color fading to yellow. I will have to look at the bottom of his feet to see what color they are...
Not trying to arguing about hatchery v. breeder... just mentioned Superior because that's where they came from :-) I happened upon them almost by mistake. I feed them turkey pellets, 20% and supplement with a mix of my own... Blue Seal Sunshine pellets, black oil sunflower seeds, whole oats...
Thanks for the replies. I am new to LF cochins, and am just curious about their development. Hopefully this fall, I will be able to meet up with some LF cochin breeders at the shows and pick their brains! Thanks again!
If you go to the Modern Game Bantam Club of America website, look under Library... there are many articles about Moderns. In particular, look for the Feather Conditioning article. It talks about using cod liver oil in their diet, as well as on the feathers. I would be very careful about...
I have 2 pair of blacks and 1 pair of partridge cochins. The blacks are from Superior Farms, and the partridge are from another breeder. They were hatched the middle of March this year, so they are about 4 months old. Should they be more feathered out than they are? I know the pictures...
I accidently barricaded myself in my coop this winter! I went out to feed the chickens and rabbits before leaving for Christmas Eve dinner...the rest of the family had left already and I was running late. It was an unusually warm day for winter in Northern New York, and the snow was melting...
