Review by '' on item 'Ameraucana'

I started with Mom and Dad when they were chicks, eventually hatched 32 babies in my kitchen counter incubator. Had to give most of the babies away but in the end I kept 4 roosters and 4 hens + rescued a Rhode Island Red hen. Lost 1 rooster and 2 hens year one and two, but now 4 years later I...

Brand new to keeping chickens. I fell in love with a pair of Ameraucana's even when I was not looking to own chickens! I decided to start with just 2 (was told they might be male and female) at about 3 days old, until I knew enough about them to make sure I could properly house and care for...

    Fertilizer~ Poisonous for Chickens?

Well I found out last night that he had sprayed weed killer in the rock gardens where my hens peck around every day. Oatie, the one that died yesterday was a crooked beak bird that I kept alive for almost 2 yrs with oatmeal mash. She came running to me from the garden and once inside the coop...

    Fertilizer~ Poisonous for Chickens?

My husband bought fertilizer for our back yard and I'm REALLY angry! We have chickens and goats that graze that area daily, and I'm trying to get it thru his thick head that fertilizer is poisonous for my pet buds! Can anyone confirm this or am I wrong? What about ant killer? I just lost my...

Hen Died in My Arms This Morning~No Idea Why~Help Please

My heaviest and prettiest Ameraucana hen died a little while ago and I have no idea what was wrong with her. Yesterday she was fine, running across the yard with the girls and acting normal. Now this morning I went to let them out of their coop and she stayed in, not wanting to walk. Her...

    When to cull...crossed beak** UPDATE**

Here is a photo of Oatie several months ago. Her beak has since grown quite a bit longer and more crooked, but she is still able to eat my oatmeal mash along with crumbles in a deep dish. Trimming the beak is like personal artwork, it is based on your own observations and what you think will...

    When to cull...crossed beak** UPDATE**

Awesome! Good point about the noise. My Oatie struggles at first but then just sits and waits for me to finish. Also good point about taking off a little at a time. My vet said to keep an eye out for the pink part of the beak, just like fingernails.

    When to cull...crossed beak** UPDATE**

I guess one must decide if their chicks are pets or "food". A crossed beak chick can be a wonderful pet, both of mine are. I can't imagine euthanizing a dog because it's paw is deformed, so why is it done with chickens? It breaks my heart to read that someone now misses their pet because they...

    Food for Cross Beak Rooster

I have 2 chicks with crossed beaks, one is a hen and one is a rooster. They are 5 months old now and ironically the rooster is keeping up with the rest of the boys just on crumbles and misc., no special treatment and his beak is pretty badly crossed. The hen is not as aggressive, so I take a...

I think I figured out the photo thing! We have since added more sections but in here you can see the floors and wire.

    coop floor

We built our coops with 1/2 inch wire floors due to a rat problem. We added several inches of dirt on top of that. It worked great until I had to clean it! No way to sterilize, standing water with chicken poop, yuck. So we added 16 inch square stepping stones (used red ones for country look)...

    When to cull...crossed beak** UPDATE**

After hatching 30 Ameraucana chicks in an incubator I ended up with 2 crossed beaked birds. One has a severely crossed beak, she/he is about 4 weeks old now and I keep her in a cage on our back porch with her best friend. I keep their cage by the window so I can watch her during the day and...

The First EGGS are Here!!!!...."NOW SHOWING PICS".....

Congrats on the new eggs, we have something in common! I went out this morning to feed the goats and chickens and I found our first 2 eggs! I have 2 Ameraucana's, my rooster was the one posted as pet of the week last week. The eggs are small and light green. However, the hen is not sitting...

    Rat Proof Coop

My husband (poor guy) just finished our new chicken coop a few hours ago after working on it for 2 full weekends. Our problem was 3 fold..... rats, goats and Florida weather! We wanted to install a coop that would fit inside our goat pen (had extra space there that was safe away from dogs)...
