Our oldest hen passed recently - at nine years old! Last one from our original starter batch. Bantam Brahma. She survived Marek's! RIP Sita. I don't name them any more :hmm I feel I have a duty to take care of them regardless, but we only have a small home flock... I'm afraid we'll be stuck with...
Save Eddie from the grill!!! Are you in SoCal? Eddie is such a handsome, sweet rooster - he likes to watch TV with me at night, but my DH does not like that, nor does anyone but me like the crowing (which is really quite mild in my humble opinion) He's about 3 months old. Shaffer egg. I just...

Hello all - maybe some of you remember the question I posted a few weeks ago about gender of my Craigslist "Lavender Ameraucanas" Penelope and Emma. Just to let you know, they are, indeed, BOTH cockerels now called Peter and Eddie. Gave Peter to a friend and still don't know what Eddie's fate...
Here is Winnie, 8 weeks old, who is either a VERY aggressive pullet or is showing another quality??? It doesn't help that I don't know how much pecking should be involved in their establishing a pecking order...
What do you think? She was sold as a sexed pullet.
THANK YOU!
AAgh! I went out last night (got an auto door YEAH!) and left my son to count the girls after they were in for the night (they are only six weeks old) and when I went out this morning to let them out from their run to the yard, one of them (Buff Brahma) was around the back of the run/coop...
DON'T assume what the garden center has is what you want!!! Insecticidal DE is VERY different from food grade - so make sure! our local feed stores all carry it in 50lb. bags. Not expensive.
Phil - Duuuuude! Your girls live in a PALACE!! Beautiful coop and run - a "little" carried away?
I see why you don't spend the $$ on organic - you spent it all on lumber
A very big reason I choose organic is so that I help support the producers that are growing crops that are like the chickens I "grow" for their eggs - SPECIAL. NOT GMO. That's a really big deal to me - not taking what Monsanto has decided I should eat/feed/grow. GMO is NOT harmless. Why should I...
Wanted to update you all on the gender situation - "Penelope" is now crowing in the morning and my husband is sharpening something in the garage. :rolleyes:The lady I bought them from gave me another PULLET (God willing) to make up for the fact that definitely Penelope and probably Emma are...
Well that's my lesson from Craigslist, I guess. I really appreciate all your input - We got 12 (stated) pullets from our local feed store (Hawthorne Country Store) three weeks ago and there is one SL Wyandotte with a suspiciously prominent and pink comb area, but otherwise I'm hopeful. The...
