My favorite and most active hen, Dot, was fine yesterday. But this morning, we went to open the chicken coop, and she didn't jump out as she usually does. She just sat there, so we had to carry her out, and put her on the ground. she stood there a long time, then just sat down. She's now sitting...

I was watching my chick hatch, but the broody wasnt sitting, she was just standing up, looking at it like she was unsure what to do. Then she pecked it. I thought maybe she was trying to help it out of its shell, but she started pecking really hard, and stepping on it. the poor chick was...

It's day 18 for my easter egger/leghorn egg. I went to check on my broody, and i saw that the egg was pecked. I started freaking out, thinking that maybe my hen had accidentally broken it. But then I realized, maybe she's just an early hatcher? So if you lovely people could tell me your...
My chickens (1 roo, 3 hens) are about 1 and 1/2 years old. I have never had a broody before, until about 2 weeks ago, one of my hens, Coco, started exhibiting signs of being broody. When I got within ten feet of her (inside the nest box), she'd puff up her feathers and scream. That lasted about...

Peeps is a beautiful white leghorn roo that I hatched as part of a science project. Unfortunately, my parents won't let me keep him any more, and I don't want to eat him. I have three other hens who he protects very well from the numerous hawks in the area. He's really nice to me, but he's a...
I am giving away my rooster this weekend. I had some very bad experiences with him, as he attacks everyone in sight. I am going to get a new chicken (most likey a hen), but if I DO get a roo, I would prefer him to be nice
I'm looking for breeds that are friendly and curious, lay lots of large...
My 7 month old Cuckoo Marans (who usually lays an egg every day bright and early at 6 am) has not been laying for about a week now, but still goes into the nesting box 2 or 3 times a day for about an hour at a time. Today I decided to put a fertile egg under her (from one of my other hens) and...
Two of my three hens started laying last Friday (exactly one week ago).
I found the first two eggs on Friday morning. One was very tiny, a little larger than a sparrow egg (and these ARE standard sized chickens) and was dark brown, and the other egg could hardly be called an egg--the yolk as...
My 3 month old rooster has been acting up lately--biting everyone who goes near him. I don't understand this, because he was always so sweet, the friendliest of my 4 chickens, always following me around, snuggling with me, even eating from my hand. I dont understand what is wrong with him...
First question...where is the vent?? My chicken has two holes in its rear end, one for poop, and the other for who know's what (probably for pee)
Anyway, is the bottom/lower hole the vent? If it isn't what is it?
My chick's bottom hole is crusty, white, and dry. it has something blocking it...

I have a speckled medium/light brown egg. It is averaged sized. It is in the incubator, and will hatch in about 2 days.
If you are the proud owner of a "speckled brown egg layer," please tell me what breed of chicken you have.
Pictures are much appreciated (of the egg, the chicken, or both!)...
