DITTO! In the same boat here. I went in as a Backyard Newbie. First did a lot of reading online before I jumped in.
1) I Read: that the Chickens would only cost $1 - 2.00 each. Of course that was for chicks. And not wanting to wait 6 months for eggs, I bought Pullets for $10. - $20.00 each...
My Leghorn gets all freakazoid when my Amerucana goes to lay in the nesting box.
Cant shut her up until I let her out of the run.
Im sure she thinks her buddy is missing, because as long as their together
they are calm, & quiet .
I am a backyard chicken owner.
Bought my first Rehomed 1 yr. old Amerucana. She has optimal conditions. Coop cleaned daily, laying food & treats. But never laid one egg.
My Leghorn has laid regularly 6 days a week.
I eventually sold the first Amerucana & got another 6 month old, that started...
I'm still new to this, but started out with 2 Hens. A 1 year old Amerucana & Leghorn.
They have a brand new Coop & are living in optimal conditions.
The leghorn is laying 6 out of 7 days.
The Amerucana has not laid for 1+month.
California weather has been sunny days & cool nights.
No other pets...
I am happy with the Crumbles. My 6 mo. Leghorn is Hyper, eats all day & lays daily
My 1 year old Amerucana is totally mellow, tame, eats as needed & does not lay at all.
If scratch is a treat, what is Mash?
Having a real hard time finding another pullet/Hen to buy.
Morgan Hill, CA.
I am currently feeding my Leghorn & Amerucana Laying Crumble
It has been suggested I use Scratch or Mash.
Should I use one, two, all 3? Or stay with my Crumbles?
Thanks for all the replys. I feel better now.
Guess I am used to my girls in their covered coop & run.
Always looking preppy clean, except during dry dirt baths.
If anyone knows anyone who sells chickens in the
Silicon Valley, CA. Gilroy to San Jose, I could sure use
some help.
Remind me to thank my girls for laying clean eggs in their nesting box.
I have read you should not wash until ready to use? I don't know the
rationale for this. Why would it make a difference if you wash upon laying
or upon use?
But being a retired nurse, there is no way that egg is coming out...
I only have a couple hens too.
All the dogs in the neighborhood bark a lot louder than my girls.
I have an Amerucana, & a Leghorn.
No early morning surprises
I spend enough time keeping up with the outdoor food, water & poo mess.
I cannot imagine having anything close to that in my house. Yuk
Why would you want the diaper issue? Sounds CRAZY to me.
So what would they peck on in the house? The carpet, Wood floors?
Make sure they dont peck at an...
I have been looking for another egg laying pullet/hen, & having a real hard time finding one,
when I saw a Craigslist ad for Rhode Islands for $10. which is really cheap in this area.
After making an appt., I arrived but the owner was not there. So I walked over to the so called
Coop. Which was...
I am still very new at this & I am starting slow.
I have a small backyard Coop with a large backyard.
for Egg laying only.
It is a New Coop that I clean daily, clean food & water daily.
I have 1 Leghorn that lays almost daily.
But I don't believe my 1 yr. old Amerucana has laid since
I got her...
Mine are also confined. I am feeding crumbles & oyster shell. This morning was oatmeal & mashed banana
But I haven't added grit or scratch.
One is laying daily eggs, one is not laying
Leghorn & Amerucana
I researched for about a week while the coop was being built. And what I learned is for every person that said one thing there was
someone else who said the opposite, & it can be very confusing. Then I spent the next week worrying if they were "in" too much
or eating enough etc. etc. They do...
