I was told this was a black birchen marans cockerel. Is that true? The chicks I bought were all supposed to be BCMs, but he showed up. Is he worth something in any kind of breeding program? What should I do with him?
My 50lb bags cost less than your 20lb bags... you need to find cheaper feed! Maybe you should post Where am I forum and ask people around you where they get their feed.
I think it's funny that I may never know... they do look like bantam appleyards, especially the head stripes on the hens. Although they don't look very "bantam", I need to weigh one of them.
I got them on a whim at a poultry show in newnan when I was picking up my Marans and was so caught up...
I thought maybe they would moult and get darker, but my mallards have always been a lighter color than most of the other ones I have seen on here. Now my drake has a almost black head so I'm thinking they may just be a mix. Any idea?

I made 4x8 boxes at first, but I found them to be too wide... I changed to ~3'x16' rows and like them better... just my opinion though, seems like most people like the 4' wide boxes.

I homebrew also and am planning on at least giving the chickens some of the spent grain. I make bread a dog biscuits out of them also. Just be careful because, as I'm sure you know, the grains can go sour pretty quickly...
