Removed the shavings and replaced with just paper towels. It took 24 hours but they stopped itching. I'll keep to paper towels for a week and then switch to sand. The pine was irritating them. Thank you all for the help :)

Did your chick make it alright? I ask because I brought home six jersey giant chicks and they are all itching and scratching themselves.

They were in pine shavings at the store and under the paper towels it is pine shavings. I wonder. I've never seen chicks itch so much.

Just picked up day old jersey giant chicks, arrived in the mail at my local chicken store today. They are scratching themselves like crazy. What could be causing this?

I have a friend who wants to take the chicken. I have explained everything and they are going to take the chance. My girls aren't accepting this chicken and I am thinking it is a roo too. But my friend wants it either way. So we'll find out eventually I guess.

Hasn't crowed, but also hasn't laid an egg that I have seen. The Deleware has laid an egg. I'm concerned that instead of a red sex-link hen they passed me a RIR rooster.

I'm planning on sending hubby and my ten year old up to get a starter flock we gave away our flock last fall. . . and well we haven't been able to keep to that, and we have realized once and for all that we're a family who needs to have chickens. We miss them too much! That said my wish list is...
