Two year old chickens have not molted.

My entire small flock of four 2yr olds have yet to molt. Am getting an average of 3 eggs per day. I live in Iowa. Is this normal? I have kept chickens for 10 years and have never had a chicken not molt.

    Coyote decoy

Has anyone ever used a coyote decoy to deter hawks? I live in an urban setting and recently had a hawk attack one of my hens. The hens do have a covered pen, but I have gotten into the habit of letting them out for a few hours when I am home. It isn't a huge area and they do have some cover with...

    Severe molt and balance issues

I have a 2 yr old Australorp hen that is going through a severe molt. I'm talking nearly naked!. She is also having what I think are balance problems. She tends to walk to one side as she's moving forward and appears to lose her balance at times and will just sit down. I have separated her in...

Colloidal silver for respiratory infection in chickens.

I came home yesterday to a sneezing and wheezing chicken. I quickly removed her and administered 1 cc of colloidal silver 20 ppm. I also soaked a small piece of bread with olive oil and 3 drops of the silver because I was not sure exactly how much of the 1 cc I had gotten down her as she was...

    Leg injury

I have a 2 yr old New Hampshire with a possible leg injury? I found her just sitting in the yard. When I got near her she stood up and walked a step, but tried running and fell down. I examined her leg (right leg) and foot and can not find any outward signs of injuries and nothing seems to be...

At what ages are fryers vs stewing hens

Don't know if this is the right place for this question. We have decided to cull a couple of our laying hens that are mean trouble makers. They are 1 yr old (Australorp) and 2 yr old (Barred Rock). I'm assuming the 2 yr old is a stewing hen. But what about the 1 yr old?

Will standard size hens hurt a bantam hen?

A friend of ours brought what I believe is a Dutch bantam hen (I looked at pictures and am pretty sure that's what she is) that he found in his backyard to our house, as he could not locate where she came from, and no one answered ads. My husband said we'd take her without asking me. I hate...

    Crowing hen

Does anyone have a hen that crows? My Buff Orpington started crowing yesterday. I have never heard of this. For a little background on her, she's almost 2 yrs. old and has always been extremely, annoyingly loud. So as not to irritate the neighbors (and hubby), during the summer I had started...

    Broody hen

I have a broody Australorp that has been that way for 1 week. I have her confined to an extra large wire dog kennel at the moment. At nights, I put her on the roost with the other 5, and back into the kennel in the morning. Do they usually last that long? She shows no sign of giving it up. This...

    Wheezing chicken

I have a 1 yr old wheezing Barred Rock. Looks and sounds just like this youtube . Discovered her last evening before they went to bed. I removed her from the other 5 chickens and she is in a kennel in my house. Looks and acts fine, except for the wheezing. Does she need to be on antibiotics? And...
