Does yone out there know what causes eggs to become "sticky" inside the shell? A few of the fresh eggs i have cooked seemed to have less albumen and the egg sort of stuck inside as i opened it to drop into the pan.
I have a 4-5 yo barred rock that has suddenly developed an issue. Well maybe not so suddenly. I first notice about a week or two ago that the middle toe on her right foot would curl in to the inside toe when she walked. Now she can't walk, she just lays there on her side and she has lost weight...
Thank you. I have already disposed of her. I am just going to treat as if it were both issues. I will keep posting. I appreciate all input. Thank you again!
Update... the sick chicken was dead this morning. Looked for the culprits and found none on the outside. I can only assume they were inside at this point due to the death. I will continue as stated earlier and just treat as if i have both issues.
if they are maggots what does that mean for everyone else? Im still gonna worm n clean but will the rest of the girls be okay? I do have a couple with poopy butts so i will wash them off too so i make sure they are clean. Are eggs comprimised at all? I am pretty sure the sick one isnt laying
the problem is that i don;t have flies right now, in fact it has been raining for days, we have lots of eartheowms where we are, and my chickens have been free rangeing every day, so i think that these are some type of round worm or maybe caecal worms but they arent; long, they are very short...
I have aflock of 15 chickens. In the past few days i have had two chickens die and one more is about to die. I picked her up to look at her butt because it was all poopy and some yellowish poop stuck on it and i saw these little maggot like worms coming in n out of her butt! They are gross and i...
i should add that i did notice soft eggs in the coop the past couple days. two to be exact over the last week. I will get some antibitotic today and try that with her. she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, she is currently foraging in the yard with her coop mates.
one of my chickens has a pronounced swollen rear end. She walks "bowlegged" becuase it's so big. She appears to be pooping because she has poop on whats left of her butt feathers however, most of them are gone. What could it be???
I too am having another issue. Another white leghorn has died, mine are 2 1/2 years old though. I had originally 6 WLH's, and about a year ago I hasd to cull one because she had a large lump under her beak. Well now in the past few weeks, I had another of the WLH's develop a smallish lump under...
Here are my nesting boxes... just Home Depot buckets with lids, then cut the lids out leaving a "lip" on them to hold in shavings, attached to 2x4 runner boards using small screws, top row has a 2x4 "foot" that fits between the bottom far end buckets and the next one in to prevent sliding...
Mine eat meal worms, black oil sunflower seeds, triple mix (corn, oats and barley), alfalfa, oatmeal, yogurt (usually mixed with ground eggshells for added shell strength in the new eggs laid), leftover scrambled eggs, cooked potates, scratch grains, and corn, but their all time FAVORITE is...
update... I have new feed... crumbles. The girls luckily did not get sick at all. I also have been offering alfalfa (scraps that fall when feeding the sheep and cow) and just a little triple mix (corn oats and barley, I have it for my cow), to get them back in the pen at night. They have a new...
Okay so I went out to feed my girls last night and I keep their feed in a galvanized can with a lid. I usually buy crumble but my DH bought pellets this time. I had been noticing the feed has a strong medicine-y odor but thought nothing of it really, I noticed last night however some of the...
Who washes or rinses their eggs and who doesn't and why? And if you don;t how do you get at least any poop or blood off them without damaging the "bloom"?
I have a total of 20 chickens now! I started with 9 - 3 GSL's: Lucy, Ethel, and Hilda, 3 BR's: Flower, Susie and Pebbles, and 3 RIR's: Bonnie, Gertrude and Big Red. Then I ended up getting 6 WLH's because my DH wasn't sure about eating brown eggs : Tiny (we lost her last year ), Moe, and the...
I had always wondered what those things were called! I have wanted one to put the collected eggs in until I clean them for storage. I usually just leave them in the tub I collected them in until I clean them to crate them and put in the fridge. How long are eggs good for on the counter as long...
