If only we could see inside and know what the problems were so they could be fixed straight away.
He was the perfect size for hugging. :(
Thank you again for all your help. I wish this story had a happier ending. But you never know... I might write that children's book one day. I want to...
He had a node on his trachea where it splits. Could have been cancerous or benign, but it caught fungus and the fungal infection is what caused the swelling that blocked his airway. Nothing I could have done, this would have taken him eventually, even if this fungal infection was controlled, it...
Unfortunately, the ending is, like so many others, tragic. My Jersey boy passed away tonight. They took him out of the oxygen chamber for us to take home after no improvement. He buried his head in my boyfriend's coat, seized and passed. I've learned so much these few days. Such a poor little...
All this because feed stores and vets here close on weekends and my dum dum ahem didn't have an emergency kit put together. Lesson learned from this chicken drama: be prepared for bad stuff in advance. He's not out of the woods yet, but he's at the right place and they'll get me what I need to...
On my way to that vet I passed another that was closed on Saturday. I stopped by and asked if they could do anything. They said no but referred me to another place. I rushed home, gathered up my now weak and dark purple faced boy, made the BF get dressed (he was hugging the Jersey and rocking...
I would hug you right now buy I gotta dive to the vet to get the baytril! Oh, and I don't know you so that'd be kinda weird :) but thank you, I need a little hope.
Thank you. I wish I knew that yesterday and had picked it up. He seemed to be doing ok in the afternoon. Learning RI on the fly with these birds is not the best, there's just so little time to act. Just over one more hour until they open.
I can't. I'm so sad. I don't want to scare him, I don't think I can kill him, I'd screw it up and that would be even more horrible. He's so sick. Antibiotics are supposed to work. They're supposed to work. I'm so so so sad and scared for the others. Two more hours and I can call people. Two more...
Current situation: my Jersey boy is suffering.
1. I can get baytril from a vet far away, but I'll call closer ones first.
2. Do I need to do anything for the rest of the flock? They currently have ACV and electrolytes/probiotics in their water. No signs of infection other than one didn't lay...
When does one know to euthanize a chicken? Dogs I have a better grasp on. He can't suffer another night like tonight. Or any more hours of this. 3 more until vets open. Oh no oh no.
Oh he's having a rough night. He's gasping and hardly getting any air. The vet has a prescription of Baytril ready for him but he seemed better this afternoon so I didn't pick it up. I hope I'm not too late. The bedroom he's in is super warm and humid with a heater and vaporizer. A few more...
I just said goodnight to him. He's really having laboured breathing. I'm exhausted but so worried he won't be here in the morning. Ugh. Here's hoping for another dawn.
I might take him back to the vet tomorrow. They can weigh him. I can't see his trachea and esophagus they're so far back and I'm afraid the antibiotic has been going down the wrong pipe. I'm assuming they wouldn't cough if that happens. He ate a meatball just now. Not his regular diet, but...
He's sleeping right now, I'll have to feel it in a bit, I don't want to disturb him. When he's asleep, his wheezing is very light or not at all. He hasn't been eating much so I imagine there isn't much there. He does poop out what goes in (pomegranate seeds make that easy to track!) but his poop...
I cleaned up his nose with some vetrx on a qtip and it hasn't had any discharge since. The foam in his mouth only appeared once. His wheezing is very bad, he's not drinking, he will eat some on his own. Not sure how to get him to drink/eat more. Tube feeding is a fight I haven't been successful...
So it's his second morning on antibiotics. Last night he fought me hard against the liquid so today I gave him "antibiotic oatmeal" which he's eaten most of, but it was only a tablespoon. He's not eating much and I haven't seen him drink at all, I force him water through a dropper and feed him...
