The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Just reporting that I have 11 Button quail chicks and my hatch is done. They are so cute! Here's a funny photo: don't worry - baby wasn't dead (just being a crazy quail baby):

What a kind sister you have! So cute! Chicks can sit at the pipped stage for 24 hours (on average) so there's no reason to panic yet. It's torture waiting though!

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

They do like a fluffy cloth and they'll sleep underneath it too which is good for strengthening their little legs as they push up into it. Your little one is so cute there - I can't wait to see her fluffed up too! And I'm looking forward to seeing your Serama (we don't have them here and I...

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

It's my Saturday so right on schedule I woke up to 7 little Button babies raising the roof. They are much happier in the brooder. The other 4 eggs are tapping away so they should make an appearance later today or tomorrow.

But you have to keep checking - you don't want to miss it. Doesn't matter how many times I hatch eggs there's something so magical about seeing those babies pop out. Hope you have a great hatch!

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

The temperature thing has been well researched due to potential application in the commercial egg laying business but no experiments have found it to be true. If your hens are the large ones then I'd plan for them to hatch at 21 days as they will be larger eggs. Hope you get some cute...

Give it a few more days just to be sure. Eggs can be weird sometimes. :fl Probably a good decision to leave handling those precious eggs. :fl for a good result when you do check.

Wow, that is some crazy snow! Um, I set 5 more Button eggs which takes my total to 27. Kinda hoping they don't all hatch!

:celebrate I found some Button quail eggs out in the aviary today! 6 of them! So I can set a few. Hopefully they'll give me a few more before the 15th.

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

My cheap plastic one needs a constant eye kept on it. In the hot weather we've been having I've been having to turn it right down, then up again in the morning when it's cooler (mine just has a dial). In colder weather I've wrapped it in a blanket, and added a bottle of water as a heat sink...

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

I had to set my Button eggs yesterday. I'm glad I'd been collecting them because it looks like, despite them being inside, they've decided they've had enough for the season (it's autumn here). I cleaned out their cage and that was it - no more eggs laid. I will set a few Coturnix eggs on Tuesday...

And I've still got 10 days to wait before I can set my Buttons! :barnie I do have a few Coturnix due to hatch the day before though. :fl Fertility is down as it's Autumn here, but my Buttons are inside so they should still be good.

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

A lot of work! They really are still just a little foetus. Initially hourly feeds and I'd leave them 5 hours overnight. Only half their crops are open to start with but that slowly opens up so they can eat a little more. As they grow the time between feeds gets longer but even as older chicks...
