The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Checking in here. My final hatch total is five. One egg had to be removed early on for likely "badness" from the smell of it, the other looks DOA, so I'm tossing it. Happy Easter everyone!

Yikes! What did you wind up doing? Are you allowed to kill them in your state- especially if you needed to take out 3-5 of them?

That sounds like a mink or stoat for sure. Poultrykeeper has a good article about how to get rid of them- they're smart little buggers, and vicious too. https://poultrykeeper.com/pests-and-predators/stoats-and-weasels/

Saw this video about hatching eggs without a shell- it would be hard not to meddle before day 21-22

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Here's a weird question: Has anyone ever had a funky smell around the incubator? The students and I cleaned the incubator with a light bleach solution and let it dry fully before we set our eggs. Now there's a smell in there- almost a slightly "fishy" smell, a bit like a dead animal. I can't...

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

My students and I set seven eggs on Monday morning. Lakenvelder eggs from a local breeder, hopefully all will hatch Now just hoping not to lose power in one of those March madness blizzards we seem to keep getting.

Yes, especially in flocks with multiple roosters, where you might be thinking of culling a few of the older ones, who may not be as potent anymore. The collection process was what was hanging me up, I just wasn't sure if it could be done. But, Im beginning to believe there's a YouTube video...

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

I've looked at a few videos, and I guess it IS possible to check a rooster's fertility manually. You will need a sterile syringe, and a good microscope, and a person to help collect. Here's the video: Warning: a bit graphic content

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

About checking the fertility of a rooster, sorry for the slightly graphic question... Is it possible to manually collect semen from a rooster so that it can be checked under a microscope? I know it can be done easily with horses and such. Is it impossible with roosters due to anatomical issues?

Looks like one of the creatures from an old Jim Hansen movie, used to have nightmares about them...

Now that looks like a lot of work! They can't walk around and eat/drink by themselves like chicks and ducklings, right? How much time daily would you say they need?

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Very cute, but penguins are too tricky to care for, and I need to set limits on my bird hobbies. I might get into ducks at some point, which can be a gateway to geese, and eventually emu if you're not careful.

@penny1960 That is true, the variety of colors and types really is addicting. :) Were the ones you grew up with White Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds? Marans are really sweet, and beautiful as well. Enjoy them!

The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Well, the bug has bitten me now. I've been looking through my state stock swap listings, and got a major case of chick fever. I was planning on hatching from my own, but noticed two different hatching egg sellers that I can't stop thinking about. One was for Silver Lakenvelder eggs, the...
