Thanks for this. It's very helpful. It was not all at the same time as some were more developed than others before quitting but I wouldn't rule out a couple going at the same time. I will review my temperature and humidity records to see if I can pinpoint something.
I tried the dry incubation this time because it is suggested for incubating at high altitude. I've had a real problem with drowning chicks in the past. This time, humidity was between 28 and 30% during incubation and 60% at lockdown. I also kept track of the weight loss for each egg and knew...
My final count is 7 chickens, 4 EE and 3 OE.
I’m very happy with the results even if the numbers weren’t that great. Fertility was very low but I was expecting that with so many girls and only one rooster. Of the ones that were fertile, 64% hatched. The part I’m happiest with is that there...
I know how you feel. This is the first time I’ve actually gotten a decent hatch with chicken eggs. I’ve done three before and I had a lot of chicks that developed but died right before hatch. It was so sad. BYC members pointed out that hatching at high altitude is different. With a lot of...
Seven of eight are out. Last egg had no pip so I took the opertunity to put the others in the brooder. I did candle the last egg. I don’t see an internal pip but I can see a huge vein going right by the air cell. I will give it another day.
Woke to the sounds of chirping this morning. Five of eight have hatched and number six has pipped. :D Even if the last two do nothing this is the best hatch I’ve ever had. I am a dry hatch convert. :bow
My area is very dry. When I first turned on the incubator to test it, my humidity was 13-14%. I had to up my house humidifier to 30% to get consistent readings. Even with that, I had to add a little cup some days to keep it up inside the incubator.
Great thanks. Funny enough I never had trouble with hatching my quail chicks. I usually got good hatches from them but these darn chickens eggs...:barnie
I put 8 eggs into lockdown last night. I've been trying the dry hatch method for the first time so my humidity has been around 28-30% average for the duration (very dry climate). I added water last night and this morning humidity was at 60%. I know for lockdown you want to try to increase by...
Candled for day 14. Went from 42 eggs to 8 obviously developing, 3 questionable but not hopeful, 2 quitters, and 29 infertile. My rooster is clearly mating the Leghorn as all her eggs were fertile. I do have 3 dark brown ones developing, so I am still hopeful of an OE. Weight loss is higher than...
How about you send some of that rain my way? We’ve had a very dry winter with hardly any snow. Everything is so dry; just waiting for a tiny spark to set it all ablaze. :(
I think it will just take some time to build a customer base. I think I might also offer a deal for 2 dozen eggs. People always like to buy stuff when they think they’re getting a good deal.
Thank you. Yes, she is a WH. One of the first poultry birds I ever got. Wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for those four little ducklings. :love
This is the first time I’ve had enough extra eggs on a regular basis. I just started selling but so far no one I know has wanted any. They have...
I weighed all my eggs and candled almost all of them. Many of them seem to have lost too much weight but since this is a trial run and I’ve had a problem with drowning chicks, I’m not going to make any adjustments. I did read that they could lose as much as 25% and too much is better than too...
I couldn’t wait any longer so I set my eggs today. There are 42 total. It’s a mix of BCM, Wellsummer, Barnvelders, Leghorn, and EE. My rooster is an Ameraucana so any that hatch would be OE or EE.
