Hatch is done.
#7 hatched a little black chick.
#12 a blonde with what looks like a pea comb.
#9 another blond, with an odd... fleshy spike? on its chin. I'll probably be posting photos of that to try and figure out what it is.
All chicks have feathered legs, all appear to be healthy. I'll...
Egg #12 has pipped.
Current tally:
9 eggs going into lock-down: #4, #5, #11 all failed prior to lock-down.
4 eggs hatched: #1, #2, #6, #8
4 eggs pipped: #7, #9, #10, #12
1 egg still unpipped - the biggest remaining one, #3.
First three chicks are in the brooder doing well. Fourth chick is...
Egg #7 is pipped.
3 eggs pipped, 3 eggs unpipped, 3 eggs hatched.
Chick #3: Removed for examination, due to the hatching situation, and placed in the brooder where it can be in a dark, quiet place rather than back in the incubator. Still lethargic, but improving steadily and dry. Just not...
Egg #10 has pipped. Chick #3/Egg #6 is still resting, but is starting to move more. The first two are in the brooder, snuggling.
Current tally:
9 eggs to start with.
3 hatched.
2 pipped.
4 no visible pips yet.
Hatch day: tomorrow.
I would have left the first two in the incubator, except that...
They should be Cochin or Cochin crosses! Australorp is a possibility for the mother, though - the owner has an 'unknown black hen' that I suspect is one. They've got very nice fluffy little legs, and already want to be tucked into a pouch on my chest instead of tucked into their brooder.
Chick...
I made the judgement call to assist #6. Blood vessels were fully retracted from a white membrane as it was revealed. The chick was in the proper 'hatching' position, with its head under its wing. It was just at the polar opposite of where it needed to be, and did not have room to move inside the...
Second pip, egg #8, hatched 6/24/18 evening, about four hours after external pip. Unexpected indeed.
Chick looks good. Unfortunately, a decent photo is not possible given the humidity on the inside of the viewing port... and the fact that I was going to clean those today, to facilitate viewing...
Unexpected development. Routine check to confirm temp and humidity were holding steady revealed a pip in egg #1. Hatch day isn't until the day after tomorrow.
Edit:
First pip, egg #1, 6/24/18 mid-afternoon.
Second pip, egg #8, 6/24/18 early-evening.
Remaining eggs have been weighed, marked, and set into lock-down.
Current tally:
Twelve eggs set.
Three eggs culled, failed development, one with bacteria.
Nine eggs remaining, all with good veins.
I did not candle long enough to confirm movement in all.
Weight loss on some eggs is higher than...
Day fourteen. I noticed something while turning the eggs over the past couple days - #5 was noticeably cooler than the rest. It just felt different. Candling confirmed that all blood vessels were gone, and the embryo was free-floating inside. Fascinating to be able to tell the difference between...
The remaining eggs have been weighed and candled.
Current tally:
Twelve eggs set.
Two eggs culled, failed development, one with bacteria.
Ten eggs remaining, all live, visibly moving, with good veins.
Weight loss on some eggs is higher than projected, but on the majority it is spot on...
After consideration, I candled the two potential quitters again tonight, and decided to cull them rather than wait until the 16th. I'm glad that I did.
Egg #11: Failed development. Tiny embryo, clear blood ring, no veins.
Egg #4: Failed development. Gelatinous mass, no blood ring, no veins...
Day after tomorrow is weigh-in and progress day! I peeked again last night, though, and it looks like I've got two quitters. The other ten look like they're doing fine. I'd have been very surprised if they all made it, given the problems with temperature fluctuation at the beginning. I'll update...
eBay was where I was able to find Serama eggs. Unfortunately, apparently most Serama Club breeders do not sell eggs, only mature birds, which I'm not really interested in getting.
So, twice now I've incubated eggs. They were shipped Serama eggs, purchased off eBay. Both times, it ended up being a horrible hatch rate.
The first time, I received eighteen eggs. Six of those were viable by lock-down, after eight were removed as clears, one failed in early development, and...
