Saved and read. I will be sure to re-read the entire thing before I do my inpsections.

    Looking for my best rooster

Egghead - Thank you for this. This is kind of what I have been doing. My first cull has been at the 12 week mark. It was not a large cull, but strictly the weakest of the birds. Size was very much taken into consideration as well as comb and any other genetic weaknesses (I had one bird with...

    Looking for my best rooster

I have additional space, but I need to do some work in order to properly secure that pen. These cockerels are 4 months. They are the oldest that I have. I have 8 total cockerels left. Two of which have faulted combs, but are larger in size. I'm holding them for the frying pan. I then have...

Would you agree that 6 months is a much better telling point? I think that most of these birds are fault free so they're worth seeing how they turn out.

I plan on holding for another few months, but if there are some that can be eliminated I prefer to do that early. I don't enjoy feeding this many chickens. As well as the upkeep it puts on my run. I'm borderline over crowded as these birds start to fill out.

That's correct. I sell the pullets and butcher the cockerels

    Looking for my best rooster

Fair enough. Thank you for your input. I have two other roosters that are about a month or so behind these guys. I am kind of waiting to see how they put on weight. I have found the biggest problem so far is just complete lack of size which is a big problem for both the APA standard and in...

Multiple hatcheries. No specific breeder. I have notes that I could look back on for each bird, but I don't have that information in front of me.

    Looking for my best rooster

I completely forgot to look at the foot section of the birds. But I will make sure to fully pay attention to that for cull purposes on the hens. How terrible is the head shape in your opinion for APA? I'm not thrilled with it, but this is always a very weak point for me.

I would say all are white with some pink showing through

    Looking for my best rooster

Twisted comb, but maybe slightly better overall head shape? Color is too bright and possibly too much white in the wings. Apparently my email didn't send me all of the photos of rooster #5, but I don't think he's the strongest contender anyway

    Looking for my best rooster

As you can start to see. The color gets lighter and away from the standard even further. The white starts to really come through as well. The wing feathers aren't completely white, but there's still a lot of it. Head shape again looks to be poor (unless I'm just way off). Only positive for...

    Looking for my best rooster

I'd love to shoot for APA show, but as you'll see I don't think I have the birds for it. I recognize that I need to work on breeding that if at all possible with what I have. I think sadly as far as APA goes, I need to luck into some good stock and introduce it into mine. As far as I can...

    Looking for my best rooster

Rooster 2 is not as deep in color as rooster 1, but the speckling is also where I'd like it to be. The pure white feathers in the wings makes him a cull in my opinion for showing, but he's probably my 2nd largest roo which would make him great for production.

    Looking for my best rooster

All roosters are around 3 1/2 to 4 months old. This guy (rooster 1) has my favorite color out of all of them. It's much darker than most of the others and the speckling is not as predominant which I think is good because most of my hens are very white dominant. The comb appears to be good...

    Looking for my best rooster

A quick back story. I fell in love with the history of Speckled Sussex as a dual purpose breed for the homesteader. A good laying breed that's hardy, good at foraging and friendly to boot. I always like to keep a rooster and do a sustainable flock. Well these girls go broody as well so I can...
