Boards are cut. Each shelf holds 2 cages and there will be 2 structures with 3 shelves each. A total of 12 cages, 6 bantams and 6 standard (unless my last cage I make for the bresse pair instead)
Roach, my little roachback Phoenix pullet, came back inside. Can't tell if she's a fast learner...
Also, bantams aren't out of the question. Preferably ones on the bigger side, but I have some females that are definitely bantam size (thought they're standard breeds) that do okay with the males
Oh god, yokohamas 😅😅
I have tried for years to get them. Every year they were out of stock, finally got some last year, only to lose half to jumping out of the brooders and being chilled and the other half in the horrible rabbit tray incident of 2021 that also took several other keepers out.
Thinking about maybe a standard cochin. My mom loves them and I can get them sexed. But I worry they won't be great during the summer when it's so hot here.... That's the hard part, birds here almost need to be both cold and heat hardy
I'm going to move Ratchet, my silver legwork with the bad toes, up to the red coop. After losing Peanut and a little mix (Cashew), I'm down to 10 girls between 3 males. I got by with around 8 between two, but with the third being here, I don't think I can risk that. Might bring Roach, my little...
The cull males have been out and about for 4 days now. The snow has made it impossible to close their run door. However, they have yet to mess with my mixed flock next to them that also free ranges.
We lost a pullet yesterday. She looked like they smothered her by accident when they were all under the coop (don't ask why, there was no reason for them to be down there).
Also almost lost out resident hermaphrodite (No, we're not certain she is, she lays eggs and brooded chicks last year...
Impossible to find eggs or chicks unfortunately. And even cold hardy birds have hard times here sometimes.
And sadly -8F is actually not nearly as cold as it gets in the winter here.
Yeah. Glenn plateaued at almost 5 lbs liveweight. The Orpington is probably closer to 7 or 8. Not quite as heavy as Big Boy, but closer to him than to Glenn. Unfortunately the Orpington is absolutely not willing to be weighed where Big Boy and Glenn usually tolerate it for a round or two
