So 1 of my Ancona Ducklings (1 of the ones that pipped on the wrong end) is not growing like the others. It’s smaller & almost like it’s head is growing but not its body.
I’m thinking it may have a curved or shortened spine.
I’ll try & get a photo to share in a bit.
Not feeling great about those last 3 eggs.
I quickly candled while in incubator & not seeing movement. One possibly had movement but... I’ll leave them a couple extra days just in case.
I’ll post photos soon of the babies 😊
Ugh nerve wracking!
I put the duckling upright into a small container still in the incubator so it doesn’t get trampled by the other hatchlings & keeps the umbilical area clean.
I was super quick about it & had to add a bit more water into the incubator anyways.
I now have 2 healthy ducklings & 1 questionable.
The 1 in question was the 1st egg that pipped at the wrong end. It seems premature. Eyes are closed for the most part & it can’t keep its legs under itself. Pretty much just goes back into fetal position. The yolk absorbed but the umbilical area...
I had 1 properly pipped egg hatch out! A little more black than o would have liked to see on an Ancona but pretty none the less.
The 2 wrong pipped ones are still alive but not really progressing any.
I helped the 1st one externally pip a little more to make sure it was getting air as it wasn’t quite through the shell membrane. I candled it & the air cell is all on 1 side of egg vertically. It was dipped a little lower when I put it into lockdown but not all 1 side.
The other was able to...
1 Ancona duck egg has externally pipped ....at the wrong end 🤦♀️
Never had ducks pip at the wrong end. How well do they do? Keep close eye & possibly assist after 24 hours?
I read the assisted hatching article that has malpositions listed. I guess I’ll follow that.
Day 18 on my Ancona duck eggs. I candled today & removed 9. Most stopped within the 1st 7 days & a couple between 8-18 days.
The other 15 are moving & the aircells are stable & are looking appropriately sized. There’s maybe a couple that are dipping deep in 1 side.
Hopefully they all make it...
I’m dealing with this exact situation.
Had 24 duck eggs come in with wobbly aircells. I let them rest out of the incubator in their carton for 24 hours. Then put them in the incubator standing up in the turner with the turner off for 7 days. Then I switched the turner on. I candled on day 9 &...
I currently have a pole going about shipped eggs & gestation of quitters. I would appreciate anyone’s votes that have hatched shipped chicken or duck eggs before.
Find it Here.
Update for those chicken eggs I pulled from the incubator (the ones stagger hatched between my duck batches).
Thought they were 2 days past hatch date so I pulled them & decided to open starting at the aircell. Got the shell off & the membrane moved! I Vaselined & put all 3 eggs back. Looked...
Well it’s early into day 6 for my Ancona duck eggs. These were the ones that had detached air cells.
They have been sitting fat end up in the incubator without turning. I decided to give them a quick candle (has to open the incubator anyways to remove 3 chicken eggs. See story below)during the...
