My final tally was:
9 eggs set
2 clears
1 early quitter/explosion
1 late quitter
3 dead in shell
1 live chick
What an abysmal hatch. I’ve never had such a disastrous result before. I’m washing/sterilizing the incubator as best I can now and getting ready to set some shipped Bielefelder eggs...
I found someone with some silkie chicks available about 90 miles from me, so it looks like I'll be making a road trip first thing in the morning to pick up a couple of buddies for Eve.
The things we do for our animals...
I moved little Eve over to the brooder. She ate a little at my prompting, and I dipped her beak; she's now snuggled under her brooder plate making happy chick noises.
It's not looking good for the remaining eggs, but I'm going to give them until tomorrow morning, just in case. You never know.
Yes, I have plenty of room, and will have another hatch in three weeks (hopefully that one will go better than this one). I can usually mix ages in my brooder no problem, but I've never had a single chick involved, so I'm undecided about how I want to play this one out. For now, she's content...
All fluffed up now. She’s not quite steady enough on her feet to go into the brooder, but she will be soon. No sign of life from the other three eggs. So…Do I make a TSC run this morning to see if they happen to have any chicks? If none of the others in this batch hatch, she’ll be alone for...
My first egg hatched at exactly midnight. How’s that for timing? It’s not entirely dry yet, but I don’t see a head spot (it’s from a LCN egg), so I think it’s a pullet. On wheaten down, though, I’m not super confident that I’ll be able to see a head spot; I’m not getting excited about that yet...
Still no action here. These chicks are in no hurry to greet the new year. I set them very late on the 10th because I was busy on the 11th, so they really should start doing *something* today. In theory, anyway.
Still no pips here. I did a quick candling this afternoon, and I have 4 eggs drawing down with movement, though. I opened my late quitter and confirmed my suspicions; looks like it quit around day 15 or so. I'm not sure why, other than it was the most porous egg and the closest to the one that...
I didn’t set my eggs quite as early as @gimmie birdies did, but mine should also be a bit earlier than the “official” time. No peeping yet for me, but hopefully tomorrow I’ll start hearing some! I have one egg that I’m still a bit suspicious may have quit on me, but the remainders look good.
I have 6 Bielefelder hatching eggs coming that shipped today! I'll set them as soon as this batch hatches and I clean the incubator. Looking forward to being part of the January hatch-along, too.
As for this New Year's Day hatch, I'm rapidly losing optimism. I have one of my few remaining eggs...
Home from vacation and ready for these eggs to hatch! I did have an explosion to clean up when I got home...that was fun. I've had an egg explode under a broody before but never in the incubator (thanks to daily candling). The problem egg had clearly developed a bit (vein still visible in the...
A third of my eggs were clears. I suppose that's not entirely surprising for a December hatch from a relatively young flock. It's the first time I've had more than 1 clear/quitter in a batch, though. So much for my 90+% hatch rate streak!
I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow and won't be back until...
I'm one of "those" people - the ones who can't help but candle daily. 😅 Too soon to tell on this batch of eggs, though I'm pretty sure most of the green ones are developing and suspicious that the eggs from my LCN are not. I can usually see enough to feel confident about discarding eggs by day...
I set 9 eggs. The 6 green ones are from my Ameraucana/Rock pullet, and the 3 brown ones are, I believe, from my Lemon Cuckoo Niederrheiner pullet. My cockerel is an Ameraucana/Olive Egger cross. Looking forward to some pretty Easter Egger chicks in a few weeks! The father of both my cockerel and...
