I'm not sure about everyone else, but my feed prices just sky rocketed!
Got feed yesterday, and my favorite Organic feed went from $32, to $47 a bag! I spent over $100 on two bags of feed! 🤯😳😳 Wouldn't have bought it, but I have to feed the flock. I'm going to have to switch back to my old...
Interesting, I'll look into that.
So far, my oats and field peas are coming up, but I think all my other seeds either got killed by the birds, or the cold spike we just had.
Replanted-
Sorghum
Millet
Soy Beans
Field Peas and Oats mix
Hairy Vetch
Then Field Peas and Oats, Spinach, and Black...
I just got my seed order today! I got 5lbs of Field peas and oat mix, 5lbs of Sorghum, 1/2lb of soybeans, and 75 corn seeds. I'm also waiting on hairy vetch, and going to pick up BOSS, and a bag of millet bird seed to plant.
Picking up a bunch of straw bales today, and hope to get the beds...
Good idea! I really want to plant sweet potatoes this year, for us and the chickens. I'll have to look into using the bales once I'm done with them. :)
Okay! I'd love to! I think I'm going to make some beds with them, and fill the inside with dirt, like a raised bed too. Might try planning corn in the bales though to use up the space. Not entirely sure yet. I'll post a thread and document how it goes. :)
I buy a soy free feed currently. I've always been concered about spraying, though I haven't done much other research on it. That is interesting. I'll look into other things to grow then to replace the soy. Seems alfalfa was mentioned earlier.
Just out of curiosity, do you have any reading on...
Same. For my flock I seem to feed a whole 5 gallon bucket a day, with a little in the bottom to help the rest ferment overnight.
Wasn't sure if this was normal or not. I guess it depends on the amount of birds.
Question, so what are you doing differently than me? When I fermented my feed during the winter, I had to use a 5 gallon bucket to feed my birds. Maybe I just have more birds than everyone else. I have 13 chickens, 10 ducks. Does that sound about right? I keep hearing 1 gallon bucket, and now...
The smell could have been from a few things. 1) It was too cold, not fermenting, and going bad, or 2) It was the klam yeast, though I'm not sure if it was that without photos or similar.
I do think its a lot easier to start trying it when its warm though, its tricky in the winter. You could...
I was interested in that too. My biggest question was how to get the adult fly population going so that they come back and lay eggs. Seems pretty simple for the most part though. I saw a video form a guy how has the ramp funnel directly down a tube which went into the chicken pen. Thought that...
Currently warming up from the winter. Got some 50* days this week and likely get warmer as we come into spring. I'm not sure about farm crops, but peas, lettuce, is starting to come up in the garden. :p
I 100% agree. I don't expect it to be perfectly balanced, rather a supplemental forage if prices do sky rocket, or feed starts to become less available.
Otherwise I'll just have all the seeds on hand and keep feeding them the regular. :)
I agree, Goji plants wont start producing instantly...
Alright, I'm thinking of ordering the following-
Field peas/Oats cover crop
Hairy Vetch cover crop
Millet cover crop
Sorghum
Corn
Soy beans
Leafy greens
Root vegtables
Maybe a Goji Berry bush, I've been wanting one anyway. ;)
BOSS seeds to plant, though they will be fed in moderation
Also...
I just started trying to sprout some on Saturday. Using Scratch and Peck feeds. Seems that all of the grains that are whole are sprouting! I'm excited to try it.
