Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

I finally got my hands on a genetics book! But I have no time to read tonight. Wondering what the quickest way ton achieve a melanistic calico would be? 2 of the sons are definitely calico. They have room for improvement but I'm happy enough with the amount of white I'm seeing at around 1 month...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Me again! So regarding the 3 chicks from the brahma and the melanistic roo, you were right! One chick is dark skinned and splash and a pullet. The other 2...light skinned and cockerels. So now I have another question...I have a bantam hen out of the deceased EE/silkie cross. She's got black...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Here's the little chicklet... That dark bantam roo didn't have any white down though. I know he was just a mutt bird but I loved his color and form and even though I didn't need 3 roosters ( I'm not even allowed to have chickens, technically), my hope was that if/when we moved, each of my roos...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Before I post a pic of the chick (I haven't taken it yet; she's still sleeping) I want to post a pic of another rooster we had in the bunch earlier in the year. He was separated into his own flock and was my son's favorite. His name was Logan. In June, we had a really hot week and we lost him...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

She's out! Happened while I was picking up kids at a little before 1 pm. My husband later admitted he reached in and helped her. He's a softy afterall haha The membrane is probably the toughest one I've ever felt; in Nature, pretty sure she would have died. I don't regret waiting as long as I...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Watched her try to push and shudder and just go still. So made the call to at least extricate her head from the membrane. She just laid there. Went outside to help my husband and came back in and she was able to get her foot out πŸ₯° Guess at this point, if she has any fight left, she'll do the rest.

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Update on little bird...no addt'l progress. It's been another 6 hrs. Veining pretty much gone. Went in and removed the majority of shell leaving the white papery membrane. The inner membrane still has her sucked in tight though the moisture I added yesterday and the humidity makes it a bit more...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Veins are starting to recede and she's rotated back a tiny bit...presumably to zip. Hoping.

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

No progress yet. Still same position. Her cheeping is faint but she's breathing. I still see a couple veins in the membrane that are just too apparent for any type of assistance so I'm going to just let her be. Writing this more for anyone that stumbles on this thread in a similar situation...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Agreed. Hard. But if I meddle and she doesn't make it, I'll live with guilt. If I leave it up to her at this point, I have peace knowing I gave her a chance and it is what it is. But praying for a little fluff butt greeting me in the AM!

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

I read a bunch of different articles and posts (I'll check yours out in a moment). It seems that 24 hrs is the point that assistance is tolerable...if not recommended...but this case is different. I have only assisted a few times over the years...one was a double yolker where I suspected the 2nd...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Need advice regarding that pipped egg. She pipped sometime before 4 pm yesterday because I saw it was pipped when I fed flock and locked run for the night. This morning, there was no progress. At around 4 pm, I pulled last 2 eggs because broody was up and tending to the 2 chicks. I opened hole...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

I was going to ask if the comb indicated the bantam as the dad. Need to reread all you wrote but if dark roo was dad, I'd expect a greater hence of something else. I think it's possible that the dark roo and the BraekelX hen could possibly produce a light legged chick but I expected at least...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Little dead chick looks to be mostly white down with light skin/legs and a single comb. Yolk is huge so I'm thinking it passed a day or so ago. I always worried these eggs were compromised when another egg broke and got yolk over the rest of the clutch when the broody and BraekelX squabbled over...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

I haven't taken dead chick out of shell yet. When kids get home around 1 pm, I'll let them be present. Since we homeschool, everything is a teachable moment and they love the BraekelX hen. Since it's her baby, they'll want to say goodbye. I'll try to see what comb type it has. Other than that...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

My only issue is time....my husband has 3 jobs and is going for his Masters. I have a p/t job and I homeschool our 3 kids and take care of a literal zoo of animals. No time to list. I dream of reading...anything and everything ...but at the end of the day, I'm always so tired. Kids are 13, 10...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

And sadly, I don't remember what comb the little dead chicken had. I don't usually put meat in the compost but I just couldn't throw the little thing out. But I doubt I'd be able to see anything at this point. It wasn't ready to hatch yet though so perhaps comb was underdeveloped and under a...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

All of your info is amazing! TY! I fear I'll have to reread and take notes and such to fully comprehend. I probably should have explained what I meant by 2 copies but it doesn't matter...it's still wong haha. I've tried to really read and comprehend info others have given me over the years...

Genetics question regarding mutt birds 😁

Wondering now if dead chick was a cockerel with its light skin color and clean legs since mom was the Braekel/sexlink. Maybe I'll still get a dark skinned pullet out of that combo too. I won't check again until the AM. Broody usually repositions when I change water and shake feed down and I can...
